Creating turtle ponds

Has anybody made an outdoor pond for turtles?
What is the best thing to make them with?
It would be for eastern long necks, most likely 4 adults.
thanks

Follow this link and ask there. Have a look in the photos section while your there and check out Mile's set up.

You should try for 1 cubic metre per turtle but the better your filtration the less you can get away with. Turtles like to do things though so they will need some space.

Use a concrete or a fibreglass pond.
Turtles have large/sharp claws that will puncture pond liner making it leak.

Drop me a pm if you need info on filtration & water chemistry etc.

You level it as flat as possible using a trough (spelling)

And does it need to be sealed/coated with anything once dry to prevent leaks or leaching?

Best to coat it with fibreglass/pool sealant
(not sure what this is called). This comes in different colours.

Pool sealant has to be non toxic so your best bet is to ask for the stuff to line a goldfish pond with!! This is very important

There needs to be shaded areas of land and water. Also easy access to basking spots with non abrasive ramps and rocks/logs... also needs a turt proof fence which is buried into the ground cause believe it or not, they can dig and climb!!

I strongly suggest you join the group peter suggested for any turt info...

That site has a wide range of people from scientist like Scott Thomson who described several of the species of turts we know today, turtle breeders, hobbyists, enthusiest and the insane.
If you dont like it you can just unsubscribe. I'll even do it for you.

Another part of Aust turts and frogs is that I run a list for unreleasable turtles there(in the database)You need to be a NSW Reptile Keepers License holder and be able to pick up the turtle when your turn comes. You also need to be contactable through the list and have the facilities to care for the turtle an provide a seriously good life for it.
