Death of a dragon

Damn!! One of my male Water Dragons died today. On Saturday during feeding time he didn't run up to me to grab food from my hands as he usually does. Straight away i knew something was wrong. I approached him and tried to catch him and he ran off lethargically. Yesterday i tried to catch him and he ran off dragging his back legs. Today after work i checked on him and he was dead. He may have been attacked by a larger male but theres no marks on him. I dont know what caused him to lose the use of his hind legs. I bred this dragon and he was about 3 years old. Sad day indeed.

RE: Death of a dragon

Was it in an indoor or outdoor enclosure? What did you feed it?

RE: Death of a dragon

It was in a large outdoor enclosure with 3 other water dragons and 5 blueys. Its diet was: insects, banana, raw steak, mince, dog food and occasionally mice. I was thinking maybe it accidentally ingested a pine bark chip that may have stuck to its food and this caused a gut impaction.... perhaps.

RE: Death of a dragon

I've had two beardies die on me a few years ago and a sign that they had intestinal blockage was that they were squeezing the back legs together about 2 days before they died one seemed like he's lost the use of his back legs the following day. Booked them in for the vets and they died that day. Just before the end they seemed very lethargic.
Sorry for your loss mate.
Simone.

RE: Death of a dragon

yeah, it sounds like an intestinal blockage to me... these things can easily be fatal if not caught early. Beardies are more prone to them because their hips are narrower, but may affect other dragon species none the less. Substrate is often the cause of impactions. You can try and move whatever is in their gut with parrafin. Sorry to hear about their loss
