DECC Ballot

Hi,
I noticed that there is another ballot posted on Petlink for those in NSW. This time for five Saltuarius Swaini – Southern Leaf-tailed Geckos. At first I thought it might have been an April Fools! Chose a good day to post it but then I came to the conclusion it is genuine. After the last one from their Hurstville Office I realised that although there maybe more than one of some species they were balloting them off individually, and in the current post this is made clear.
Why?
My understanding is that if you are successful you cannot then move the reptile to someone else. Even if you could how would you locate other receivers? Hence this system effectively ensures that these animals cannot be bred. So even in the case of geckos which can be easily sexed the system while fairly distributing amongst the herp community, ensures 'solitary confinement', unless you can locate another one from another source.
Perhaps DEC could make a comment?

I guess they want to make it so more people can get them. So if you get one, and you want to breed it, you'd have to buy another.

Are they hard to find?

All fauna books need to be sent in by the end of April. You're not too late to enter the ballot, full details are here: DECC reptile ballot

The books aren't due until the end of April, so it won't matter if you haven't got them in yet (but you would need to have sent them in last year, presuming you had a license this time last year).

the ballet says : Expired licences or those licensees whose fauna record book we have not received for 2007 will also be excluded from the ballot.

I missed it but DECC also posted here in general herps this afternoon for this ballot. I wish all those you want a single gecko all the best. Perhaps we could have 'points' awarded for book completion and promptness of return that gives the recipient two rather than one of the ballot reptiles

Not that uncommon, but then when did you see any of these for sale?. The issue I'm raising is whether or not the system is supporting or discouraging captive propagation
