I always just tip the frozen rats into a bucket of hot water
Same here. I give 'em a bit of a slap on paper towell to remove excess water & feed them off.

If there's a simpler way to do it, then let me know.

i put mine into a container of hot water and feed them wet. i think this is why i have had no trouble swapping from mice to rats as when defrosted in hot water it takes away all the scent so when you first give it a rat it looks just like a big mouse because it has no scent and used to it having no scent.

Cant understand all the "water takes away the scent " stuff, as pythons taste rather than smell. Defrosting wet takes away nothing.

Howdy guys, I chuck quails, rats and mice in a big bucket of hot water to defrost (out of the plastic bags) so their scents are all mixed. I think that way a snake won't get stuck on the one diet item?????? All of my snakes will take any of the above foods so if I run out of one or the other it's not an issue. I dry them off a bit on an old towel so stuff doesn't stick to them. A prey item consists of a fair percentage of water anyway so i don't know how beneficial the extra water ration on a wet item would be.

I thaw mine dry but place them in hot water for a few seconds prior to get a heat signature, so my hand doesn't become the target

interesting the different approaches...

yes they do taste, but the way they do it is by capturing molecules on thier tongue and then the tongue comes back in the mouth and transfers these molecules to the jacobson's organ... so in a way it is similar to smell because they are still gathering it (scent/taste molecules) from the air.

and i was merely asking if it was POSSIBLE for the water to diminish the smell in some way. I was thinking that the water could bind with the smell/scent/taste molecules, diluting them or even stopping them from travelling as far as they usually would. but im no scientist so i dont know definitively

I have 1 snake who seems to be scared of the water dripping off the rats when I hold them over her so I kind of dry them with a paper towel for her so they are damp not soaked. Everyone else, straight from bucket to their mouth.

I defrost in a large icecream container in their bags due to feeding different sizes etc in another icecream container with warm to hot water and put the first container in the other as i don't like my rodents dripping wet and find that large rats etc can squash and make a mess of your smaller rodents to feed to your younger snakes.I figure they still get a fair bit of moisture from a defrosted feed and afterall there's always the water bowl if the snakes are thirsty!

They taste the rat. Especially if it is warm, as it should be.They then also see its heat signature.

i completely agree with you on that point.... that was never in debate.
what i am saying is that i have a jungle python that not take food, rats or mice when they have been defrosted directly in water. whereas my other snakes will. I am trying to determine why.

Does he still not take it if its dried off on paper towel. Some will not take it dripping.
