Diamond breeding

Does anyone have experience with breeding diamonds - I want to get a male friend for my 2 year old female. When is the best time, and how old should the male be?

Dont have any experience, but think you're a bit late for this season. I also think 2 years old is too young, esp for a DP.

Maybe those more experience with DP's can help you out.

Not so much as age, but try to get them around similar size.

You want to put them through a cooling period, especially the male as this instigates sperm production.

As they come out of the cooling you can introduce them together.

Alternatively, you can have them together all the time, however it is generally felt that keeping them apart produces better mating instincts

Hope that helps

Thank you - so D, does that mean that next season would be ok if they're both around the same size? How long should the cooling period be and when is the best time of year to put them together?

You dont want to rush them into breeding, i have some 3y.o that next year i will be breeding.

http://www.aussiepythons.com/showthread.php?t=23047

Check this link, it is quite indepth, however, i do know a guy that drastically cooled 4 pairs this year, as decribed and they all died. Diamonds are a cool weather python so though they can handle cooler weather, they should still have some where to warm if necessary.

Reptilian, technically what you are saying is true, if you can regulate the complete temperature in the enclosure, you could forseeably breed them when need be. Obviously you cant breed them and then breed them in another 6 months, it doesnt work like that. But theoretically you could cool them in Nov instead, so long as the temp could get down.

Doing it though is not really practical, and there is a theory that suggests that they have an inate clock, so that they have a natural cycle.

breeding time for diamonds is generly spring! my mating started a couple of days ago, (mine are out doors) how ever you can get them to start earlyer by bringing them indoors say around the end of august.
As for cooling they are as pepole say a cold weather snake but this doesnt meen you can keep them out side and just give them a hide box!!!!!
In the wild they would find somewhere warm like a decaying tree hollow which stays extreemly warm, what some pepole do is put a hide in and under a heap of straw to hold the heat or wrap there avioy in glad wrap, what i did this year was placed a foam box in i big black barrle full of mulch, it heated pretty good

I think you should read some books. You certainly don't need advice from people that don't even keep diamonds or haven't bred them yet. You will need to start feeding your diamonds now to get them into breeding condition for next year. I stop feeding them in April and when they are totally empty of faeces I turn the heat off. September the first I turn the heat back on so their basking spot is around 32 degs and feed them in a week when they start getting more active. Last year i observed mine mating on October 17 at 3am though they were probably at it at other times I am sure.

Read up. Ask the people who really know, not people who post about things they know nothing about. Good luck

yeah i know what you mean and i agree. thats why i am picky about what i ask and where from just in case some people dont know what they are on about but most people on this site seem honest. i will check about but i am more interested in breeding a jungle with my caostal because diamonds cost too much lol
