Rats waste a lot of their smaller food items so I thought I'd make some feed blocks similar to those bird seed bells - and they work great!
Ingredients are chook scratch mix (has lupins, wheat, sorghum, barley, sunflower seed, cracked corn, layer pellets etc - comes in 30kg bags for under $20) dry puppy kibble, gelatine and water. Plus can add calcium powder and whatever other goodies you think would in the end benefit your snakes.
Use at a rate of 75% dry ingredients - the majority of that being the scratch mix and just a little of the puppy kibble etc.
20% water
5% gelatine
Method: I found it convenient to measure the components in a 1 litre measuring jug. So tip 750ml dry stuff as above into a mixing bowl.
Measure 200ml of water and 50ml of gelatine, mix them and zap in microwave for a minute. Stir well and let sit for a few minutes, stir again and add to dry stuff, mix very well.
Spoon into moulds - I used some of the missus' tupperware thingos but if your not into a bit of violence you could use plastic cups or something like that. Press it into the moulds well.
Refrigerate over night, pop out of the moulds in the morning and sit them on the window sill to totally dry out.
Ready to go!
Benefits are: more time between feed refills, less waste, can add goodies like vitamins, calcium etc that will ultimately benefit your snakes, less mess, less work for you.
Hope this is of use,
Regards, Steve. |
