I don't use click clacks but if I did it would have a thermostat in it just to be safe.

i don't use a thermastat, before my snakes go in the box, i work out what watt light i need and i take temperature readings for 2 days, if it reaches the temperature i need it at, i use that light watt! i only use a thermastat for cooling, and incubating!

Definitely get a thermostat...
The heat mats that we have get over 40 degrees (might have been over 50... can't remember, but way too hot for a poor lil snakie anyway!) without a thermostat and I would imagine that coming home to a cooked snake wouldn't be the best feeling in the world!

Small 8W heaters probably don't need it but it isn't going to hurt to have one. I lost a baby due to not having a thermostat on a heatcord and that was a stupid mistake I will never do again. Even though there was 20c gradient from one end to the other of his click clack, the only place I had for him to hide was over his heat. He didn't come out and was badly burnt. I did notice his drying skin but I thought he was going to have a bad shed and did not relate it to the heat. That afternoon he had a raw spot burn on him. I did seek immediate vet attention for him and he survived another 4 weeks looking like he was going to be ok. But, he began to bleed everytime he moved and then died whilst shedding

Be safe, use a thermostat.

my heat mats are presure sensitive, abit more money but they are worth it!

also, this is a serious question, do you really need heat mats for every tank unless you don't have a light?

I would be inclined to use a thermostat for hatchies regardless of what you are housing them in. I think a stable environment reduces the risk of issues in the early stages of their life. Some might say that this is irrelevant bacause in the wild they are exposed to temperature variance. Granted, but in the wild there is no where near the 100% survival rate expected in captivity.

YES!

If you don't use a thermostat well insulated pockets can cause overheating and can lead to dissaster.

When I was at the VHS reptile expo a woman came up to me and asked if it was normal for heat mats to discolor where they were under the click clack. It seems that the pocket of air under the plastic was trapping sufficient heat to discolor the plastic. It is also important to position the probe of the thermostat close to where the heat mat will be at its hottest.

In a perfectly insulated setup even milliwatts will eventually cause heat build up.

We spend hundreds of dollars on snakes and heat mats and lamps etc etc so why scrimp on a thermostat.

In a small area like a click clack the snake has very little choice as to where to go so you need to ensure the temperature is right . A thermostat is the easiest way to do that as long as it works. The bigger the erea of heat you are controlling the more room for error you have.
If you only use a 5 watt mat you probably wont need a thermostat but then again the container will probably be too cold when the ambient temperature is cold.
