Hey everyone,
I was cleaning my cages today, and when i lifted up the newspaper to replace it, i seen sparks comming from the heatmat!!!!!!! It looks like it has been burnt out or something! I have no idea how this has happend, all my heatmats are the same size, brand and wattage, and are all hooked to a thermostat set at 32C degrees!!!!!!
So anyway, i have now learnt to check all equipment, everytime i open the cage!
Here are some pics. The dodgey one and the other one is what its ment to look like
If you know what causes this to happen, please let me know!
Thanks,
Bill.

I reckon the heating element shorted somewhere. Faulty soldering, connection or something similar.

Damn, at least you found it before your house burn't down! I always thought that they where one of the most stable heating elements. the only problems I have heard about is liquid incursion based shorts.

...it looks as though liquid has seeped into it, which would explain the sparks - snake urates?
...if you do, that is your problem, there are specifically designed waterproof heat mats that would be better suited...

Then again there are a lot of cheapo brands coming on the market these days, and really how well can an 8 year old chinese kid solder?

Yes i do keep it inside the cage, under the paper... These heatmats are laminated, so i thought they would be waterproof?
Says "Place heatmat at opposite end of cage to waterbowl to avoid evaporation". on the box, nothing else.... ????
Thanks for the replies
Bill.

They're meant to stick on the outside of a glass tank that is slightly elevated off the ground - otherwise it causes 'hot spots'.
Never use them inside a cage/eclosure!

I don't know why they are not all made waterproof? It seems to make a lot more sense!

I had that happen with an old big enclosure of mine. Burned a hole in the wood and the carpet below. Made the wood black but i did not notice until it was too late. That is why i check regularly.
