Neil Sonnemann sells brilliant BHPs and if it's your first then he would be a good person to buy from, everything he sells is feeding very well on rats or mice and you won't have a problem. I have bought several BHPs off Neil over the years and not once has there been any kind of problem, he also covers freight on BHPs which is handy. |

Look into retail margins - you obviously never have - and discover what businesses see as a desirable return. |

You have to feed and house the animal and there is always the danger the animal may become unsellable due to injury or death. the $400 markup seems low to me. |

That is a very reasonable markup.
Up here in Qld
Maculosus sell for $295.
Standard phase Beardies sell for $90.
Not sure what the turtle prices where.
All around 100% markup |

Pet shops need a substancial markup to stay viable.
If you want sensible prices you are better off dealing directly with the breeder. You are also more likely to get good advice etc. from the breeder. This is why the Herp Trader was set up - so interested herpers could locate the breeders of the species they are interested in.
You may wish to survey the snakes page at http://www.herptrader.com.au if you wish to know what the going price is.
I am quite surprised just how stable the prices are for most species. In the last few years some species have become cheaper, but generally by no more that 20%, and many have remained exactly the same.
