You brute!!! Why don't you find a nice set of stairs to go and fling yourself off and see how you like it!

In all seriousness, I think from that height it's not a big concern, but depending on what you have "accidentally" dropped the snake on is. You’d imagine hard tiles and timber floors etc aren't the easiest on these animals and would be best avoided!

I've seen a 9+ft Brissy carpet strike a full grown possum out of a tree at about 9ft up and hit a concrete footpath without visible injury, and it certainly didn't stop the snake from continuing to constrict and eventually eat its prey. You'll find they are pretty hardy animals and are used to taking a few heavy knocks when dropping from branches and other places with prey items in the wild. That said, if you're still feeling a little unconfident when handling the snake, I'd recommend placing a mat or something soft underneath where you’re most likely take it out. Better to be safe than sorry I reckon

ha ha, 6ftpythonsgirl. yours sound very familiar. my MD wont realy eat. but my Bredli would prob eat herself to death. not sure if i agree about small feeds though cos my Bredli once swallowed a weaner mouse sideways! it took about a half hour to get down then she sulked for about three days. (prob stomache ache).

O M G im suprised she managed..Poor thing bet she wont try that again!!!.. i wonder if its just MD's that arent pigs? cause from what i have heard most people have the same drama's with them and yet i never hear people saying my bredli wont eat??

I like the soft mat idea i might give it a try or i might just handle my bredli on my bed for comfort she is a little snappy. and i nearly dropped her the other day and she rapped around my arm and landed on the carpet mind you i was sitting down so it wasnt that high.

couldnt live with the guilt if i dropped my snake from high up!!!

thanks for all your comments... My confidence is high with handling peyote... but perhaps she's less confident of me so far. I felt terrible with her fall. But she seemed pretty hardy and she's showing no signs of stress.

Last night she had curled up in my back (spooning for snakes) and I got her out when I had to move (worse than having a cat). She looked grumpy then, not snappy I might add, so that was when she threw herself off the couch. I am guessing a hissy fit???

Well, she's ok. i am going to try her on a weiner on monday and see what she does. I have heard more small feeds than one big feed... but who knows aye?

Well, this weekend Peyote will be trained on 'other people' - I've had her a few weeks now, and she's quite used to handling. She's very friendly indeed.

ITs usually surprising how big they can actually eat.

Haha.. she spent 5 mins on my GF but my GF was more freaked and Peyote (you could tell) just tried to get back to me as quick as she could.

But this is the weekend when she goes on multiple people and is getting used to them all... Thanks all for your comments... all duly noted and actions taken to feed and prevent injury in the future!

hehe...

So you should. Remember they're not toys to get out and play with.

Unfortunately bruises are hard to see under scales. Which is why too many keepers think their snakes can take a knock or a fall without being stressed by it or feeling pain from it.

No animal is designed to take a fall, snakes included. Falls in the wild are due to unforeseen incidents/accidents. Falls in captivity are due to lack of supervision and careless keepers.

I'm not attacking you, just giving it to you straight.

Hi there,
Usually rule of thumb for the first year of your spotted is double the head width of your snake and that is a safe size to feed it so a weaner a week should be fine.
I have a Diamond python about fourteen months and he is on adult mice once a week and a half. I think you would be amazed how easily your snake gets a weaner down. I was feeding mine weaners from about eight months. Hope this helps.

to sabac:shouldn't you get more facts before you make harsh comments, my snake also climbs 3/4 of its body length vertical, then crashes in its encosure, should I jump in & catch him?
