I WAS WATCHING A DVD WITH ROB BREDL IN IT (DEADLY PREDATORS) AND AS I WATCHED A SNAKE EAT A BIRDS EGG (SIZE OF A CHOOK EGG ) I WONDERED IF ANY ONE FED THEIR SNAKES (SPECIALY DIAMONDS ) EGGS.
THERE WOULD HAVE 2 BE BENAFITS 2 THIS eg. CALCIUM.
THOUGHTS ??

Firstly, lose the caps, theres no need to shout.
Secondly, there was a thread about this not to long ago, you shouls be able to find it.
I experimented to see if any of my snakes would eat eggs. Several sniffed the eggs and gave them the once over. None of them ate any eggs though. It would be a cheap alternate food source if you have a snake that will eat eggs but I do not own such a snake.

when i lived in south Africa i used to own a pair of east african egg eaters. Looked almost identical to a adder, but with no teeth, it just as fascinating watching a snake down an egg as it is to down a rat.

snake6p, That was a weird Water Python that had a liking for duck eggs. It was owned by Rob Bredls father, Joe.
They set up the shot to make it look like it was eating a croc egg, but it was actually a duck egg.

I would thinkunless the snake was inclined anyway, the egg would need to be warm and smelling like the chook/duck, etc??

I would be disinclined to offer eggs to any species that doesn't habitually eat them in the wild, for a couple of reasons.
1. Nutritionally they would be very different to dead mammals or birds - just yolk and albumin.
2. Broken eggshell in the digestive tract could pierce the gut and cause peritonitis, resulting in death.
The African Eggeating snakes in the genus Dasypeltis have evolved specifically for eating the contents of eggs. The egg is swallowed and held in the throat where five projections on the underside of the vertebrae pierce the egg, and then the throat muscles contract to crush it. The contents of the egg flow into the stomach and the crushed shell is then disgorged. So no added calcium benefit there.

I reckon that the digestive fluids would break down the shell pretty quick smart, ever left an egg in vinegar overnight? no more egg shell... and that's not a particularly concentrated or strong acid. I probably wouldn't bother trying it, maybe one day though.. it is pretty cool Not staple, i'd be concerned about nutritional value long term.
