Elapid enclosures

Hi peoples, i would like to get peoples thoughts on the main differences between python enclosures and elapid enclosures. I thought maybe a top opening lid for an Elapid might be safer to allow you to hook from above rather from the same level as the snake. Also globes that are 100% externally serviced and changed. Thanx Cracks

The couple of blokes i know who keep Elapids keep them in the same type of cages as their pythons. Some are in the URS vivariums, some in Slitherin racks, and some in plastic tubs.

id make my cageing for all my elapids (if i had any or when i get mine) ither plastic tubs in a tubrack (these are extreamly secure and a great way of keeping alot of snakes and geckos) and anything to big for tubs will be kept in normal front opening cages of 4x2x2 or 6x2x2 for large active mulgas or even nice display cages with gwardars (western browns) in it they actually dig if given the opportunity

in Wa we have a law that Cat 5 animals (olives and Elapid) have to have 6mm glass and locked cages w/ signs on them warning people both with word and pictures. You are also not allowed to have them front opening as there is more risk of being tagged while reaching out in front to open/close. The few I have seen are top opening

I am a big fan of correctly designed front opening enclosures. Top opening definitely have their place, especially with Coastal Taipans and feisty Eastern Browns. The majority of my elapid collection is housed in tubs, in a rack system though.

Johno could you elaborate on correctly designed front opening enclosures. I plan to build another enclosure and this time want it to be specifically for elapid such as Rbbs or Tiger. Cheers Cracks

I feel safer getting my tiger and spotted balck out of front opening rather than tubs, I use the hook to sort of drag the tail past the sliding glass door, then hold the tail and put the hook under the front part of their body and lift them out. This way, it would be very difficult for them to swing around while I have the tail (as I don't open the doors too much, and the head is still behind glass). I hope that makes sense?!

When getting them out of the tub, it's the same idea, but they could more easily swing up when i've got the tail if they wanted to. Luckily they are lovely snakes and have never tried anything

I don't think making the light serviceable from the outside is necessary. If you need to do anything in an elapids cage, you just remove the snake to a tub.
