Enclosure glass question

I have seen many posts on the thickness of glass and float or laminated etc that people recommend so I am not trying to re-hash previous posts. I am building a larger enclosure and was after opinions as to the size of glass to use. The enclosure will be housing a coastal and measures 1900 wide x 900 high x 600 deep. I was planning on using 6mm toughened as it is low to the ground as well. This enclosure has a second bay above which measures 1900 wide x 550 high x 600 deep. I could use same size glass to keep it uniform, but obviously that may be overkill. I was planning on using two sliding glass panels for the front of each bay of this enclosure. This means only supporting top and bottom. I was planning to add track to the sides for extra strength. Do people think 6mm glass would be sufficient based on the size of each pane (approx 950mm wide x 870mm high). Has anyone had experience with track with bearings as was considering with teh weight and size of each pane. Of course it is expensive way of doing it! Or would simple PVC track be sufficient? I have read many posts on glass but not this sizing so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

im not an expert but i know 5mm is suitable for about 750mm high so 6mm should be ok. but check with the experts.
Make sure you have all corners and edges rounded off and even have finger pulls placed in

Most shopfronts are 6.8mm laminated and often span 2 meters. Secondhand shopfront glass cost next to nothing as a crack in a shopfront renders it useless but theres still heaps left for relatively small snake cages.

Oldbeard, how much does the aluminium tracking cost you? Does it work that much better than the PVC?

has anyone ever used a system the same as aluminium windows? i used 4mm on my enclosures, glass dimensions were 465 x 535 (2 doors per 900 x 600 x 600 enclosure)
do you think 4mm is thick enough for this size? it seems fine but would crack without much force.
is this aluminium tracking you speak the same as pvc tracking just different material?

Wish I knew where to get secondhand glass from and could cut it myself...

Go to a glazier and put the same question to them, rather than ask for opinions here. That's a pretty large pane of glass, lots of weight, lots of stress if not mounted right, etc...

Get some professional advice on this one

All of my enclosures are either 6mm or 8mm glass.

i used to work in demolition and they are always smashing glass and or throwing away
try ringing demo companies or building recyclers for second hand glass and windows and tracks

If you could find some reasonably priced Perspex, maybe that could be a option? Would be easier to slide then a heavy bit of glass.... But i'm sure the 6mm glass would be sweet.

Hi tonesanlainie,

You could go to Bunnings and buy a shower screen door for $100!!! Seriously though - you could... or perhaps check out Ebay for some? (i love Ebay... almost as much as I love Bunnings).

Alternatively, you may find it cheaper to have some aluminium sliding windows made to your custom measurements - your local Staff Member at the Aluminium Window Making Place (hehe...) will be able to give you a quote in a few minutes over the phone. From memory there are a few members here that have done it and it has worked out well for them. Personally, i'd feel a lot safer moving a piece of glass that size if it had a nice sturdy frame around it.

Have you started building the enclosure yet? Can we see some pics please?

regards,
Lockie
