what some people want and what some people do are 2 different things. i would love to just buy cages but the reality is its cheaper to build to how i want it done in the first place rather than changing a cage to how i like it. or need it

I love building my own enclosures.

I think Herps inspired my interest in cabinet making ;-)

I don't have the time to build them. Besides, there are some pretty cheap ones going on here usually, made by people who know a reptiles needs very well, it can't be that much cheaper to build. I wouldn't go to a pet shop for them again but I intend to keep buying them.

i love to make my own enclosures but not always possible. salvos and st vinnies are great place to pick up sideboards with sliding glass doors and cabinets, you only have to look and use your immagination.
cheers.

We just made a couple of melamine enclosures- one 3ft and one 2.5foot...the wood cost us $44.95 for BOTH (and that included cutting-go figure!).

With the other bits and pieces (Screws etc) its probably cost us maybe $60 all up for both -without glass. Am going to make some enquiries about that in the next day or two

They're neat enclosures, and we learned a few lessons when building them, next time we'll use something other than laminate. Now we're just adding little bits and pieces to get it ready for whatever reptiles we need. We were considering selling one of them to a guy we know who owns a 1 metre adult stimsons- its currently kept in one of those exoterra glass enclosures- the tall one, not the wide one. I don't think that theres enough room for him at all, but he was told by a reptile dealer that it would be sufficient, but the snake looks sssoooo cramped- he's a lovely snake- but he spends all his time curled up because he's got nowhere to stretch out- not even halfway! He has one log to sit under. Thats it.

*Takes a deep breath*.

Anyway- we are finding after having to adapt the enclosure we bought, that it was easy enough to build these enclosures to how we want it. Simple!

I like my enclosures to look as impressive as my snakes, and I know that I won't be able to acheive that by making it myself, so I buy them. sure, it might be considered expensive, but it's worth it for a solid and attractive enclosure which can be used for the life of your snake.

Simply not true.
I want my cages made of molded plastic therefore I cannot build them.
Unfortunately i cannot buy the ones i want in Australia either so I'm in a lose lose situation.
