EWD Feral Population

Just became aware of the existance of a feral population of Eastern Water Dragons in the Adelaide hills. It's news like this that only encourage tighter laws on pet keeping

I'll let you guys know more as it becomes available.

Is that unusual? I'm not being silly here, but I thought they were found right down as far as Melbourne in the wild?? Sorry if I'm way off the mark here.

You are only slightly of the mark
EWD are NOT native to SA. They are a east cost species. It appears that these animals have been dumped and have managed to survive and breed. They are a generalist feeder which increases their changes of survival but also the damage to the resident wildlife.

Doesn't mean much these days though does it? Animals which generally come from the Eastern, or Southern areas etc tend to acclimatize and can & have moved away from their known origins since their original discoveries.

I meant the name, not the impact on the ecology. Not really the topic of discussion I know, but look at the bloody cane toad - eats everything it comes across! I think it's only the crafty crows that have worked out how to eat them.

Maybe if u posted the location of where they are some S.A herpers might go and collect them. I know its illegal but if they are detrimental to the area it wouldnt be all that bad. This is just a thought cause it happens in the east coast anyway(illegal taking from wild) and if u were going to poach them better off from an area they shouldnt be. Just thought id toss the idea out there??????

I don't know where as yet. I have posted all the info I know.
As for your Idea about collecting them, I'll ask NPWSA when I get back

Fuscus,

According to "A Complete Guide to Reptiles of Australia", Steve Wilson and Gerry Swan. There is a population of EWD in South Australia

Fuscus,

These EWD have been up there for over 10 years that I can recall.
NPWS do no about them and it should be quite easy to get a take from the wild permit if you or any one would be intrested in catching them, this is because they are not a native SA reptile. They are bloody every were up there and they are all so moving closer to town every year because of the numbers that are now there.

All so while you are up there you will see quite a lot of wild deer that have been released over the years and now are breeding to quite big numbers,
These are all so becoming a big problem out at port gawler and these have been wild there for over 25years.

Regards URS
