Smile fake grass v sand

2 weeks sick leave is driving me mad so i have decided to see what other peoples veiws are on this subject, i have always had my baby on sand but 6 months ago i changed her enclosure to fake grass, up till now i have considered it fantastic but now doubts are creeping in, last few weeks, i have taken notice of her temp at various times of the day, and i have come to the conclusion, it has to go, there is not a even distribution of heat or retention of heat in it, am i being silly or do you think im right an it has to go.....?? be waiting with intrest

I used to have fake grass and have recently changed to sand.

I find it retains the heat better overnight and yet there is always a cool spot in the cage if the want to cool down in the sand also.

I think it looks heaps better than the grass, being a more natural sybstrate for my dragons.

And i think they have been much happier on the sand.

(Hope you get better soon)

Snakes should never be kept on sand.
You also don't want an even distribution of heat in a snake cage, you want a warm (32Cish) area and a cool (room temp) area.

lol, i have 1/2 the eclosure heated with a gradient of 32 at one end, and a constant background of 26, she just feels cold, was thinking sand may be better at transfering heat through to her better than the grass magpie, but thanks for your feedback.

Can you elaborate??
I hear MOST snakes should not be kept on sand not all, the morlias i have heard have major problems on sand as it get under their scales and in the heat pits causing infections...
however i hear it is ok if the snake is found in an area where they are most likely to live in sand, i.e. bredli, aspidites, childrens, spotteds, stimsons etc...
correct me if i'm wrong...just what i have heard

What do you use now Forensick??

I tried the bark chips, i didnt like them at all as the crickets and roaches just slip through it and hide. And I found that it smelled a lot after a week.

My sand hasnt started to smell yet ..... I have only had it in there two weeks.

Maybe I should put a glade smelly fresh in there, lol, just kidding.

I dont like using newspaper although easy to clean out it just doesnt look right.

i changed from sand to fake grass because i was worried of impactation, but this is the first winter where she has refused to feed, i know most female childrens refuse till spring once they reach maturity, so his could be just natures way, i was considering chaning back to sand to see if it would bring back the feeding responce?? she is looking healthy, still lots of weight to her,
