False for Sale Add

How many people noted the add for the Yellow Bearded Dragon for sale for $150ono last week. Turns out it was not for sale for $150, but in fact the seller held a bidding contest. Was not pleased when I enquired regarding a purchase and was told I had to beat $160, and that the highest bidder on Sunday would get the lizard. I believe it finally sold for $250.

I did see that i thought it a bit suspect. If you want to hold an auction hold an auction, don't go advertising at a set price.

Yeah Bob i thought it was a cracking price for that lizard.

Seems if it sounds to good to be true it probably is.

Very dodgy and i wont have dealings with them.

That may have been partially my fault, I do believe his original intention was to sell it for $150, (pick up only). I was quite keen on the beardie and PM'd the seller, offering $200 if he would be prepared to ship it (and I would organise and pay for the freight). He told me someone else had offered $200 and was willing to pick the beardie up personally, so I said fine, I will offer you $250 if you will ship it to me. I believe he told this to the other interested party and she offered to pay the $250 AND collect the beardie personally. Bummer. It seems a few of us really wanted that beardie! If I want something badly enough, I don't mind offering more than the asking price. On this occasion, though, I lucked out.

the price seemed to low for a good yellow bearded dragon,
the new owner would be happy though

Yup, that's why I happily offered more than the asking price. And even at $250, I'll bet the new owner is still pretty stoked with his/her purchase.

But the person who thought it was theirs when they said i'll take it for the asking price would be mighty annoyed.

How would you feel if you made a deal with the seller and sombody gazumped you?

Its just wrong, and gives our hobby an even worse reputation.

There are laws to prevent it happening in property trade deals.

there are laws to prevent it in private deals aswell. If the buyer agrees to an offered price they have just made a contract either verbally written or whatever. If they then go onto sell it to another person they are in breach of a contract and there is grounds for civil action.

But more than that it is bad practice and will severely reduce the sellers chances of finding future buyers if they have such little integrity.

When I enquired about the beardie, he had not yet sold it to anyone. I simply said, if you're willing to ship it, I'm happy to pay x-amount for it. Don't make me out to be a bad person. If he had already agreed to sell it to someone else then I would have said, fine.
