Frog enclosure for 7 Giant Whilte Lipped Tree Frogs

Hi and hello to everyone,

I am somewhat new to frogs, and with 2 Red Eye Tree Frogs, 3 Green Tree Frogs, 3 Brown Tree Frogs and 1 Grass Tree Frog, since September 2007.

I also have 7 GWLTF tadpoles wriggling in a tank, waiting to morph and move into a nice tank, which at this stage doesn't exist. They were due to a somewhat rash impulse when I was visiting a frog breeder back in December, and saw his HUGE tank of tadpoles. His adult ones were absolutely beautiful with wonderful limpid golden eyes and large toes. I still have 7 as they all unexpectedly survived for the 4 weeks till now.

As these frogs get pretty big, I am thinking of options for a decent-sized enclosure:
- glass double-doored drinks fridge
- shop display cabinet
- aquarium that is big enough
- find glass and use marine plywood to custom build an enclosure.

My preference is the drinks fridge, but finding one is the mystery. Is there a place where dead fridges go? I found out about auction houses, but this means bidding against people who can fix it up and onsell them. I did find one on eBay just before Christmas but being new to this, sadly was outbidded.

As a fellow frog lover i say hi

When white lips morph from taddies they are incredibly small. heaps smaller than GTF morphs, and unfortunatly they often have high morph fatality , but don't let that discourage you, as yours might turn out fine

I've got some 1yr olds that have just made it over the 4cm mark, so you won't need a large tank for then for a while. You will probibly want a small tank to keep them in for at least a couple of months, 1ft tank is plenty, but you could go even smaller than that, you just have to keep the tank in good condition.
Also don't have a big pond or water bown in wth the morphs as some can drown, but you need a shallow water source to keep humidity up - White lips are like specialst frogs if you get what i mean.

White lips also can suffer calcium defincy very easy, especailly as morphs so a good uv light, and calcium supliment is a MUST if you want them to survive.

What state are you in?

Hi and thanks to everyone for your quick replies.

Thanks AuzLizardKing, I had read the frog mansion and in fact was inspired to consider building something of my own. Isn't it awesome? Thanks for offering to build me something -- unfortunately I live in Adelaide and it's a long way from Melbourne not to mention expensive to freight.

Hello to Tadpoles, fellow Adelaide froggy person! Thanks for the your wisdom on WLTF. Now that I know about the high fatality rate, I hope I get some taddies to frog stage. Also greatly relieved that I don't have to rush to provide them with a big tank for a while. I thought they'd grow really fast, based on my experience with my 3 GTF which are growing incredibly fast, far outgrowing the RETF. I've had my tadpoles for 4 weeks now and they developed limb buds only a few days ago. I know that they can morph faster if I heat their water to 30C, but was reluctant to do that until I had their tank ready. They are currently in a turtle tank, in 1.5 inches of water for now, with a rock for land. Do you think I should heat the water and hurry them along?

Grass tree frog = oops I think I meant Leaf Green Tree Frog (Litoria nudidigitus), but still not completely sure. The pet store sold him to us as a "green" Brown Tree Frog, and in fact gave it to my son Michael as a freebie. The frog is tiny, very slender, varies from metallic lime green to olive colour. It is a great jumper, which is why his name is Lightning.

Hi tann-mann, paludariums rock! I am pondering a frog mansion myself, and that is a possibility now that I know I have more time up my sleeve. Looks like I will have 1 year or more, based on tadpoles' advice.

It's my tank.

Until your White-lipped TF's get a bit bigger keep them in a very simple tank or take them out to feed them. When they are full size they aren't that much larger than a GTF, probable a 1/4 bigger again at the most.
The tank was pretty easy to build.

This page has a great care sheet for tadpoles, White-lipped TF's and other frogs:

http://frogs.org.au/arc/caresheets.html

30 degrees for the water sounds a bit warm, and the larger the tadpoles the larger the morphs, larger morphs better survival rate.

Thanks meshe, I thought over your advice and decided that slow & steady growth is better than fast. I'll wait and let them grow at their own pace, to increase their chances of survival. I'm gonna take some photos as post soon to let you guys see their size.

By the way, you mansion is absolutely awesome. I'm so inspired by it!
