hey i had this idea today in using frogs as food..in much the same way as rodents are used. My idea is basically you breed your frogs, feed them up to certain sizes (like rats eg. pinkies etc), then freeze them. No cruelty, no mistreatment. then sell them. Now these frogs can be used to feed tree snakes and RBB and other snakes species that feed on frogs. They could be a food item used to vary the diets of 'frog feeders'. Or can even be used in feeding problem feeders.
would any one buy 'feeder frogs"?
does anyone think my idea basically sucks?
any opinions please..but dont call me names or anythin like that

Have you bred frogs? each one eats about $50 in crickets before it is half size, and snakes like tree snakes suck frogs down like a 7year old kid eats lollies.

G'day licky,
You're idea may be good in theory, but in practice it will be a disaster. Firstly, frogs are all protected native species, so I highly doubt you'll get approval to breed them for commercial food consumption. Secondly, the sheer cost of producing that many frogs would mean it wouldn't be a financially viable business venture. Thirdly, the animal ethics drama would be an absolute minefield...

I reacon I'd only use it if I really had to... like if I had difficult hatchies that wouldn't even feed on skinks, thats the only time.
But I think its an alright idea

It's a good idea if you're keeping small elapids such as Yellow-faced Whipsnakes, Swamp Snakes (particualrly juveniles) etc that won't take mice, rather than catching large amounts of (parasite infested) small skinks from the wild. Each season the young frogs can be culled (not sure how you would do this humanely?) and frozen for use throughout the rest of the season.
Breeding them for sale however, would most likely be against the law and more than likely unprofitable.

I think it would be ok to use cb bred frogs, the only thing is its probabaly illegal...
For small snakes it would be an easy way to get lots of food.

Why stop at frogs? Anyone who has kept knob tail geckos knows they breed like flies on a rotting carcase. Sandswimmers lay multiple clutches and hatch in 35 days (sometimes less). Coastal carpets.... well.... I can't think of a better food item to get BHP hatchlins started on.
