Hi guys,
Im breeding my Levis this year and im wondering how everyone else incubates their gecko eggs? Ive heard of using a heat mat etc, and people using the standard incubator for reptiles. Any comments appreciated. Ta!

I have my eggs cooking away in a little tupperware container with 1"1 vermiculite:water, and the incubator is a little 6-pack foam esky with a 4m heatcord coiled around the inside walls, controlled by a microclimate thermostat and with a probe thermometer inside.

Thats quite interesting. Ive got a hova incubator (latest model) that does birds, and will also do reptiles (with vermiculite) aswell. I think ill stick to that unless i get a simplier method people are using. Interesting Glider. Did you already have the thermostat etc hence using it all for incubation purposes?

I bought the thermostat specifically for using in an incubator, but when the time came I was taken a bit by surprise with timing of the egg! So I grabbed the esky that some of my previous geckos had been freighted in and threw it together with a heatcord I had and an extra thermometer. Next season I'll make another one a little better put together with more space, but for now this seems to be working ok.

Many people use Modified Bar Fridges or Wine Coolers as the keep the temperature inside the unit very well.
Read Reptiles Australia Issue 1 Volume 3. John McGrath has written an excellet Article for DIY Incubator Making.

Ill check it out, thanks. Ive got a brand new HOVA incubator that was given to me by a relative, that they no longer needed, its worth over $300 easily. It can be used for reptiles, so i might stick to this. Its a professional one too, and it was free so WOOT for relly!

thanks glimmerman!
i'll be using a 120L bar fridge, so i'll get a B2 and a heatcord the same as yours (6m, 50w)!
cheers!
at this stage it will just be for milii this year, so would you recommend damp sphagnum moss or a 1:1 vermiculite and water?
yours seem to do well on the sphagnum dont they?
cheers!

I use the B2 with the heatcord, I believe thats specifically what they're designed for. If you get the B1 I think it can run either lights or cords, but they advise against using the B2 for lights because it uses a power pulse which would blow lights very quickly..

If you get a B1 or B1ME at least you can use it for any other application later if you need to. I can prob get back to you with the B1 and B2 prices
