alright. the first, most popular geckoes that come into my mind are knob tails. i think they sell from about $150- 200 but im not sure. they are desert geckos so you need sand for them to burrow in. I know someone who uses red sand & heat pad; also a cave (artificial, small).
a lot of people from this site keep different types of geckos. my gallery has my pics of broad tailed geckos.
I think goldentails are popular too.
as Moreliatt said (below), it really depends what your interests are. There are arboreal geckos (tree dwelling geckos that can climb), desert geckos & many more.. ( i think)

gecko prices range from about $40 to $1000
most eat crickets and woodies etc
some need heat some dont
would be best to decide what you are interested in first?
i keep Thicktails/Barkings (U. milii)
they are a fantastic starter gecko....

Shano... Thick-tailed geckos are the way to go mate... They actually don't need any heating where we are (maybe in winter as long as it doesn't fall too low).. They freak out a bit actually if it goes over 30. They need no additional lighting are are great feeders. I can't recommend them enough.

depends what species ya going for mate, N. levis levis goes for 150-200 N.levis occilendentis (spelling) and pilbarrnies (spelling) go for round 250.
a 2ft tank would do a pair IMO or for one a 1.5ft tank. they need a fair bit of heat due to the fact the are desert dwellers, so around 28-32oC IMO, however i am probably wronge, you would best start a new thread speciically on knob tails asking how to care for em etc
