You can catch and keep asian house geckos without a licence, only do this if they already live where you do though(Qld only).

You are better of getting a licence its only around $50 and lasts 5 years, there are heaps of awesome Ausralian native geckos you can get then.

If you have a peek at my website you'll get an idea of the variety available in QLD.

The best book would be " A Complete Guide To Reptiles Of Australia" which usually sells for between $40-$50. This lists all 111 species of Geckos but obviously we cant keep them all.

Common Geckos sold today include: Barking geckos (U.Milii)-$70-$130, Bynoes geckos (H.Binoei)- $60-$120, Smooth knob tailed geckos (N.Levis)-$130-$250. You can also get a variety of Velvet Geckos (Oedura spp) but need abit more experiance with Humidity, Heat and caging requirements (some times).

Hope this helps.
