you may have read my previous thread "bynoes vs Golden tail gecko" well, i have decided to keep golden tails and i need to know everything i need to for when i get them. i am in NSW and so if anyone could get me lodged up with a breeder that would be great too. but first right now im sorting out what i will need to get.
i am making an order once i get the money for a:
61cm H x 45cm W x 35cm D
repta heat mat
microclimate ministat 100
5.0 Ultraviolate furescent light tube (2ft)
light fitting for fluro
total: $261.00
though i am having trouble deciding what substrate to get. theres:
Aspen bedding
sterile reptile bark
desert sand in black, yellow, red
sterile bush flooring
reptile carpet
coco sterile dirt substrait
if anyone can tell me what would be the best substrate for these lil guys that would be awsome.
yer, any infomation, pictures, caresheets, breeders etc would be awsome.
cheers,
Luke

Substrate is easy go to bunnings and purchase a bag of double washed sand for about $7.00, coir peat (if really needed) for $1.90, the natural one without added chemicals and fertilisers.......so theres 5 years supply of substrate for under $10.00.
Even though Golden Tails are arboreal, just purchase a plain old 2 foot tank (one with some height) I think they go for about $50 - $60 up here. Make your own mesh lid - the stuff comes from Bunnings also. Disregard a batten & UVA/UVB fluro for one gecko as its to dear for a single specimen, get a ES cord & a ReptaSun Glow 40W full spectrum globe (UVA & UVB) & place it above 10cm from the mesh lid on the outside of the enclosure by a clamp. All in all this should all be done for under $160.
The ReptaSun glow 40W full spectrum globe gives off heat so no need for extra heating plus you've got your UVA/UVB all in one, plus by placing it 10cm above the mesh lid on either or side you've got protection from it getting burnt plus you have easy access to changing the globe if and when it blows, plus you can move the globe up & down to get the perfect temps you wont near the mesh lid. The globe plus cord is about $40 all together - "We have it all" has the globes & cords as well.
See no need to pay a fortune - half the stuff you don't even need. |

ari: a don't have a 2ft tank, however i have a small 40cm x 30cm x 30cm tank thats got nothing in it except a smigen of sand would that be alright to use???
the geckos will be both display and breeding
so, just one of those uv light things on the herp shop and some sand and peat moss stuff.
hey, could i have a sand substrait with a thin layer of peat moss and that would be the substrate.
have you actually kept them, you sound like you know what your taking bout
Cheers,
Luke

Also, many (non-reptile) people consider tanks to be completely useless if it has a crack so thats an easy score for a gecko!

Luke | This size tank will be fine. Put a mesh lid on top & your done. Substrate for this size tank is simply 2-3 handfuls of double washed white sand from Bunnings & 1 handful of coir peat....mix together and thats your substrate.
Get an ES fitting already attached to the cord & the UVA/UVB globe I suggested previously & set it so its on the outside of the mesh lid, held by a clamp or other easy means & face the globe at one side of the enclosure only 10cm above the mesh lid.....simple.
If you have the tank then all you need to spend money on is the following:
ES fitting & cord $25
Repta SunGlow 40W ES $15?
Sand & Coir Peat $10.00
Mesh lid - $20 - $30
Total really you need to outlay is about $70-$80 total plus your gecko on top of that....Done. |
