Good field guide to Australian mammals?

Can anyone recommend a good, up to date Field Guide to Australian Mammals book? There are a couple around but they either are 1970 issued (probably half of them are extinct by now - LOL) or they are 40 page or so basic things (Steve Parish does one or 2). After something that goes into at least a bit of detail on each species.

Was going to put this in 'Wanted' but since these days no replies are allowed in that section of the forums I thought any replies might interest others who are after same info.

Thanks!

Have you thought of getting state / locale specific books? It may not be the nation wide listing you are after but they are very comprehensive and informative. I recently bought a copy of Wildlife of Greater Brisbane. Its probably one of the most informative books I've read, outside of a species specific publication or a scientific paper.

I was blown away by the amount of detail that has been put into it. The book even goes into fly and mozzies...

And did you learn that the giant mosquito only feeds on nectar and its larvae feed on other mosquito larvae?

Now, if that isn't worht the $30 I don't know what is...

Spiders, frogs, insects, birds, lizards, mammals... blah blah blah... It is a great book

Thanks guys, I'm more keen on field guides more specific to the types of animals but good idea, I will check that out.

Thanks again.

The mammal bible is The mammals of Australia, by Ronald Strahn. It is about $100 bucks but it is the only mammal book you need on identification, habitat, diet, weights.
