Governments....how much do they really know?

I went to get my herp keeping/selling basic fauna liscense today....and i was amazed when i looked at the offical basic protected animals name list where i saw this

Childrens Python (Stimson): Antaresia Childreni

there is so many things wrong with that lol good ol governments, glad they keep on top of things. also they had no classification for antaresia maculosa, stimsoni, etc etc....

NSW classifies the little pythons as Liasis rather than Antaresia. Anyone know why they persist with the genus that no one else seems to use? They also call the stimson the "large-blotched python" and the maculosus the "Eastern small-blotched python" but my maccie has much larger blotches them my stimson.

Yes python mum,its because of the museum book on reptiles by Harry Ehnman i believe where they coined heaps of ridiculous common names ignoring what was truly common nomenclature amongst most herpetolgists.Gets confusing for people trying to work out what they are,Mac,stimmy and childrens is easy and it relates also to the latin names.

Naxx, in SA, childreni maculosa and stimsoni all come under A. childreni..... as they were (a while ago) all A. childreni it has stayed the same.... just the same as all carpets come under Morelia spilota except the diamond which has its own as M. spilota spilota.....

Thanks zulu - the nomenclature has always puzzled me. I'm much more comfortable with the species names since they can't seem to get the genus right either. Just for curiosity, does SA consider the Bredl's to be a spilota or bredli (separate species)?

I just checked the updated NSW list of reptile names. They have finally changed the genus to Antaresia and made the common names "Spotted python" (maccie) and "Stimson's python" - that is some progress since I got my animals! However, NSW still lists Bredl's as Morelia spilota bredli. Maybe they will sort it out in a couple of years...

yep, do a scale count on the head of any bredli and any other m. spilota to find the difference
