green tree snake problem

hi,
yesterday when i was at work, i was on my lunch break and heard a scream followed by alot of people flocking around a truck, i went in for a closer look and there was this green tree snake wrapped around the strawberry crates, now i thought wow i had never seen this before ever, but then i noticed when the man went to touch it it didnt ry to move, then i realized it was stuck to the sticky tape pretty bad, the guy goes theres only really one thing we can do for it and he took out his knife and was going to kill it, i said no don't do that we can save him, i cut him off the crate with the sticky tape still attached and gently pulled it off, he escaped missing only one scale, now my problem is he keeps coming back to the crate, how do i stop him from coming back, i took him right down the very back of the feild which is a massive strawberry farm and yet he was back in an hour.

RE: green tree snake problem

most snakes return to where they have found food before.... male coastals can travel upto 10km a day to return to thir "home" even after they have been relocated. try moving him far far away from where you found him, maybe take him for a drive out to the bush, or better yet, to a different area with the same type of features as the place you found him..... maybe not the bush, as i have just been reminded that some snakes that are born into the burbs oftentimes wont survive in the bush....... even go so far as to give him a little mouse or someting to eat when you release him. normaly it would be better to release him closer to where you found him, but if you think he may be in danger from snake spooked humans, then i would move him further away.

Guess your only option would be to completely relocate the little fella.

Id suggest taking it another 500 metres or so an putting it in a tree'd area that would be inhabited by frogs. Also if possible take a line from where you released it and the crate then go in the opposite direction. If its already travelling in that direction perhaps thats the way it wants to go.

it's after the wild feirl mice, but i don't want the others to harm it, it's a danger to the rest of the employees, the man said they have a bacteria in their mouth that can make you sick

I'm not sure it would be after the mice, they are primarily frog/lizard feeders at least in the wild. The thing about the bacteria is right up there with Browns and Carpets interbreeding.

What Peter said - some reptiles are really single-minded about the direction thing, doesn't matter what way you point them they still want to go their way... don't know why really...

Small point to consider - Green Tree Snakes aree often found in pairs or small groups. Are you positive this is the same snake that returned?

its quiet possible that this time of year being rather cold, that the crate serves as a winter home, where it is easy to access the sun for periodic sunning, this time of year it wouldnt be after food and frogs are generally the perfered prey which would also be rare this time of year, I would suggest that the crate be placed out of the sun and cleared up around and see if he/she returns....

I think you should heavily reinforce your roof, as falling buses are far more likely to harm the employees.

IMO you should just tell the employees that its completely harmless and leave it to live there, if you dont want to do that take it to the closest creek or water body, tell it in a sturn voice "this is your home now, dont come back"
You can relocate him to my yard if you want plenty of friends and frogs to eat
