Has anyone used halogen down lights in there enclosure?
Do they emit any UVA or UVB?
Would rather use these than a flouro, purely for asthetic reasons. Any reason i shouldn't?

I use them all the time and think they are great.
Have a look at the "Tiled Enclosure" care sheet at http://www.herpshop.com.au an you can see how I have used them in conjuction with a flouro.
Greg Fyfe did some research looking at the amounts of usable UV they emit but it is not all that much. Also the practice of removing the glass cover plate in an attempt to increase the UV which is often discussed (including in Greg's original paper) is very dangerous because of the way they can explode when they fail - halogen globes are under pressure unlike normal globes which are a vacuum inside and as such rarely explode.
Thinking about it I have at least one halogen in each of my enclosures.
The other plus with them is that the globes tend to last a very long time.

Thanks for the info
do you know if there are any that produce higher levels of UV?
I do not really want to use a flouro, and although coastals "do not need UV" i think it would be a good thing to give her anyway. JMO

If you want high levels of UV go for a mercury vapour bulb such as the Aussie Sun from the Herp Shop.
Most Aussie pythons really do not need UV.
Diamonds probably do.
The yellow in diamonds and jungles is said to be "brighter" when they have regular UV but Jungles certainly do not need it.
I would go the halogens for day time basking and leave it at that.
The other plus with the halogens is the range of wattages and spreads which means that you can set up a good basking spot... but be warned I have had some pythons get a burn from being to close to halogens so make sure the basking spot does not get too hot.

They also produce UVC which is bad for your herps, it is damaging to the retina. At the time Greg did his paper it was not known and has since been found through tests in the U.S. I would not recomend using them, but that is just my opinion. It is not worth the possibility of damaging your herps.
Also, if you leave the glass on the globe, it stops the UV. So, if you do use them with the glass removed you run the risk of them exploding like herptrader said, if you leave the cover on, you don't get any UV. So there is no reason to really use them IMO. Go for a UVB 10% fluoro of sorts, whether batton or compact or if you want heat and light, go for an Oz Bright.

huggy, if i leave the glass cover on will that stop the UVC that is damaging?
I have decided that the UV is not really an important issue, especially as it is for a coastal. Having UV was just a bonus.

Any chance you can give your snakes a little natural uv lighting?

Yes, it will. If it is for the enclosure you are going to get, you will be wasting your time unless it is just for light and not for heat.

it is just for light, still planning on using a thermostated 250 w ceramic by day/night, and a 100w ozpurple at night ( a little heat but mainly light for looks, if it gets too hot the cermic will turn off )

ye Rev, the snake will be taken outside and let loose on the grass once or twice a week once she is big enough to not be eaten by birds.

Coastals will live a very long and happy life without any UV so getting them outside etc. need not be a priority.

According to Greg's paper, with the glass removed they produce high amounts of UVA but no UVB, so if your into providing UV to your reptiles through the use of globes  they would not be much chop anyhows and you would be better off with a Power Sun or similar. They do provide great heat for 50w though, I use them with my shingles (with glass covers) and plan on using them on more of my enclosures

I read the build sheet a week or so ago on the herp trader site and noticed that they used them in both of the enclosures. I have been thinking about it for a while as i'm about to start building an enclosure for a blonde mac. I really like the idea of using them to create a basking/hot spot in the enclosure as well as their really low profile. Just be interested what people have found that have actually used them.
cheers
james
