Hatchy Rack Help

I recently put together a new rack system, mainly for geckos. It's 3 levels high with an 80watt heat cord from the herp shop connected to a pulse thermo. Each level has three grooves routed into it about 2 inches apart where the heat cord lies.
I am using starmaid containers however if I have them sitting so that their shorter side is running parallel with the cord I am struggling to make the desired temps, if I turn them around so their longer side is parallel, it's getting to a higher temp but is still taking a long time. Now where the rack is currently located it is quite cold and being in Melbourne that doesn't help.

I thought using three runs of an 80 watt heat cord I wouldn't have any trouble making the desired temps but not so. Other then moving the whole rack to a warmer room is their anything else I can do, or something I have missed? I have also put some foam insulation under the shelf to keep the heat in but it only had a minimal effect. The only other thing I can think of is adding more runs of the heat cord.

Any idea's?

You could put a solid back on the shelves and a door on the front, then you are limiting the amount of air you are trying to heat instead of heating the whole room. 240 watts of heat should keep a couple of m2 say 10 c above the ambient temperature.

It does have a solid back, but the solid front is a good idea. There is only one heat cord that has been looped through 3 times if that makes, not three seperate ones.

Where is the probe situated? Are you using sand in the tubs, if so how deep is it?

I wrapped the probe and the thermometer together and they are sitting right on the sand at the hot end. The Thermostat is also going flat out so thats not the problem.

Is it worth making a small square with some wood and placing a thin layer of sand in this directly above the heat cord and then place the tub over the thin layer of sand? As the tubs I am using are not perfectly flush and I think there might be some loss of efficiency there?

And yes sand is in the tubs only about 1cm deep at the moment.

Yeah, i would just have a thin layer of sand above the heat cord, that should help a lot. I'd also have a well insulated hide right above the heat cord. This well help retain a lot of the heat creating a nice spot for the gex to go into to warm up.

I'd also look at getting some tubs that have completely flat bottoms.

Thanks MrB, when you say a thin layer of sand, do you mean in the tub, or between the tub and the heat cord or both?

Sorry, i meant in the tub - i misread your previous post but see what you mean now. I would get some flat bottomed tubs and have a thin layer of sand above the heat cord (in the tub) but if you want to keep the tubs you have then yes, what you suggested may help a little.

What brand of tubs, size, and source, are people using for their gecko racks?

Just a thought JP2 but if you put enough sand in there for the gecko to burrow in (assuming there are nephrurus) then the insulation in the burrow should reach the desired temp?

Should work fine, I run 1 row of heat cord, using starmaid tubs no problems.

What temp is the room dropping to at night.

Could you post a pic? PM or email it to me at junglerobb@hotmail.com

Should be easy to sort out.

9L or 10L Starmaid tubs work well. Depends on the species though and size obviously.

Thanks Rob I will get some pics to you tomorrow, I am trialling 30L and 15L tubs I think, but I will have to double check. The room gets quite cold at night as its not insulated and being in Melbourne, but even during the day it takes a long time to heat up.
