Heat globe questions

Hey all,

When you use a heat globe or heat emitter do you need to have it running off a dimming thermostat or can you just have it on all the time?

I have 3x2x2 enclosures and 4x2x2 enclosures what wattage globes do you think i should use? They will be macs and MD's

What kind of globes do you think i should use?

Cheers

I have a ceramic heat emitter in my coastals enclosure and i use a dimmer thermostat. I have it plugged in to a timer so it just turns off at night and back on in the morning.

Hi Guys,

I'm glad someone asked this question as I would like some info as well.

I run a ceramic heat emitter between 28 - 30C this goes 24/7. I've only had my MD since Oct 06 and he is very healthy but I have read about cooling them down. Just can't find any details of what temp what times etc.

Enlighten me please!!

I don't cool down my animals till they are approx 1 1/2 years of age (2nd season). I used to have a dimmer on ceramics but found them glowing one day as they are still constantly on. I changed it to a proportional thermo and it was spot on.

Light Globes are excellent with dimmers. In a 3x2x2, I use 100w and with a 4x2x2, try a 100w or a 150w, depending on your environmental temps at home. If you want 24/7 heating from above, may I suggest ceramics. If you just want day time temps, use the appropriate light globes on a dimmerstat with a timer or night eye.

hey guys, i got another question. i have heard through the traps that blue lights are actually no good for your snakes eye's and can stress them. Any truth to this?

i currently run a red 40w bulb in my tank (80x60x60) for my childrens with a thermostat and have a thermometer at both ends, temps through the day are 30c at the hot end and 26 at the cool end, at night i turn it down and have 28c at the hot end and 25c at the other, he usually spends most of the day under the paper in the middle or on a rock under the light, and at night either in his rock or cruising round in the water bowl and climbing over a skull i have in there or climbing a vine.

The bulb hardly ever turns on as the ambient temp in our room is about 26-28 anyway.

Does this sound ok or should i be changing my setup for night time so he doesn't have the red light on? Anyone heard anything being a problem with red light?
