Heater Cord???

Hi folks, went and saw Tim and Donna Mensforth-great people by the way. (Ultimate Reptiles, Adelaide), when I was down there the other day. Dave and I are looking for a cheaper method of keeping all our crix, feeder roaches and mealworms warm over the winter months. The darn infrared lights and gas are costing us a fortune. Donna showed me some heater/heating cord which seems to do a wonderful job on heating everything out in their huge reptile room. Has anyone had any experiences in using this cord please? All advice gratefully received. Cheers Cheryl and Dave

I ordered some of those from Matthew Stockdale (stockeh on APS) and they're great. His prices are cheaper than from URS too even through they're the same product. The cords are hot within minture of turning them on, there's a blue line at each end of the cord where the heating element stops (a slight bit of the length of cord is not heated at each end) and they can be used on a thermostat. Contact stockeh for cheaper cords. Also they are water-proof.

Hey Simon, thanks for that. I was really impressed how warm the URS Reptile Room was, and that was huge!!! Donna told me the whole room was kept at a temp of 28 degrees, just with the heater cords. Cheers Cheryl

Could you use it when housing hatchlings in their plastic cages? Would it be cheaper then buying separate heat mats?

Regards Ether

Ether,

Heat tape is a good option for hatchlings Its cheaper than separate heat mats. Just lay down a strip and sit the hatchlings containers half on and half off the tape.

However, having never used the heat chord it could be just as cheap and effective.

I've tried a couple of these heat cords and now I use them for tieing things up. Maybe I bought the wrong wattage I won't be buying any more though

You can also use the cord out of electric blankets as Slatey has in an article on making your own heat rocks.Buy a second hand lecy banky from vinnies and cut the cord out of a double bed blanket and you end up with many metres of cord that you can control with the control.
