heating options for a beardie

anyone out there ever used one of those non light emmitting ceramice heat things? what kind of wattage would you recomend for a beardie? do you miss a lot of night time activity when the daytime UV goes off?

I use a 150 watt ceramic heat lamp for my Stim with a thermostat. A 100 watt would have been fine but I heard the larger you go, the more wear you get out of them.

I don't have beardies, though, so I can't really say!

Mine sleeps up on his favorite log - I think he is milking as much heat from the basking spot as possible before he falls asleep!!!!

I noticed the other night that he must have fallen off the log while he was asleep, because he was now leaning up against the log, almost vertical!!!

I agree with Forensick. You should be able to see enough of the enclosure with room lights, and once your own eyes adjust its not a problem. Besides that, they seem to sleep through just about anything.

Beardies need no night heating, they live in area's that cook during the day and freeze at night, the moderately cold Sydney nights during winter suit them fine. Heating them 24/7 can stuff around with their metablism's causing them to eat more than they should (and they eat more than most can afford as it is). Dragons need a massive amount of light intesity to do well, and using a non light heat source during the day is far from ideal. There is nothing wrong though with a viewing lamp (red / blue bulb) for night viewing if needed, though I would not use it for heating them.

BUT it does depend where you live, we get freezing temps at night, and I have always used heat globes, at night. (on a thermostat!)

The poster lives in Sydney. I know of people who keep them outdoors in SA, where winter nights freeze the ground. They are more durable to cold than most people think, as long as they can get cooked during the day, beardies are fine at single digit temps or below during winter.

Hey

For feeding I'd get a shallow little plastic container that he/she can get in and out of, put some vaseline (or fluon if you have it) on the inside upper edge of it and put the roaches in there! Then the beardie can get in and out to eat when he pleases but the roaches can't escape from him. The you could put him in whatever size you'd prefer

For my ackies i have reflector globes which are really cheap and get the heat i need. However i was noticeing that they half went of their food. I set up a ceramic globe and thermostat for the nights and now they are eating like crazy again. The ackies are still really young though.
