Iam soon to build two new enclosures for the coastal carpet and a bredli which i am yet to buy. These enclosures are going to be 900mm (long) x 450mm (high) x 400mm (deep) and will be banked.
My first question is: Which method of ventilation would you consider most effective?
1) Plastic Vents - A vent at each side of the enclosure.
2) Pegboard Back - Entire back made from pegboard.
I am leaning toward the plastic vents as they are much more attractive but am worried they will not provide enough ventilation. What is your opinion?
My second question is: What method of heating would you consider most effective?
1) Standard bayonet fitting with a ordinary blue light bulb.
What watage would you suggest and does this provide enough heat?
2) Edison Screw fitting.
What sort of bulb would you suggest?
If anyone could PLEASE take the time to help it would be highly appreciated as i am very confused...
Thanks,
Nick |

but if like me you live in Perth and you get very cold days then a couple of small vents at the ends of the enclosure low down and 1 medium vent in the back up high would be sufficient to provide airflow and retain heat
My enclosure is 1000 x 450 x 450 and I use a single 100 heat lamp on a thermostat and this heats the vivarium to 30 deg no prob
I have also found that through a lot of testing the aussie brand of heat lamps seem to last longer than most other brands
You could also try using a ceramic heater but I havent had any experience with them so cant comment
Hope this helps

Well, how old are these pythons you are about to buy? What size are they at the moment? A Coastal, by it's very name, is a coastal species, maybe it would like desert conditions? Hey but hang on, a Bredli is a desert species, why not keep it in a fish tank?
Hope this helps.

PAY ATTENTION TO THIS EVERYONE. Once you make it to AFRO STATUS you are likely to lose your mind and ramble amusing and mildly hilarious comments directed towards people who are quilty of asking for advise, opinions, thoughts and suggestions of other members of APS.
Asking APS members for advise relating to Australian Reptiles is now a crime attracting the punishment of ridicule and lots of pointing and laughing.
Please bear this in mind before attempting to mention Australian Reptile species or husbandry techniques.

| africancichlidau, Im 15 and still dont find that funny... You have posted 11,461 posts since 2003 which is around 10 posts everday of your life for the past 3 years and 9 months and yet all i seem to see you posting are stupid, unhelpful comments becuase you are trying to get a laugh when actually YOUR THE JOKE!
By the way african, i live on the sunshine COAST like you and everyone can see so there are constantly COASTAL conditions therefore, according to you, i do not need heating.
Also thanks Vipercat for your help. You seem to have been more helpful in that 1 posts alone than africancichlidau has in 11,461.
If anyone else can give me more information can they please.

I use 40 watt reflector globes. They create a nice concentrated heat spot for the snake to bask under. Um, that's about as much as I am game to help you with.
