Well, I got my licence in the mail today and the enclosure I am building needs one more coat of paint for completion. It is 24" long by 18" high and 16" deep. I'd really appreciate some advise on heating and lighting. Seems there are some very differing ideas on this subject. I'll be purchasing a young Carpet Python from a local breeder once everyting is set up. Being a battler, I'd be looking for the most cost effective (but not dodgy) solution.
Here's a pic of the enclosure made from stuff laying around in the shed. |

| | | | Thats some good handywork dude, you dont want to make me an outdoor sunning box do you?? LOL
I have kept my carpet for 2 months now in a 50 litre plastic container with a quarter of the tub on a heatmat. She seems to be happy in there. And the breeder told me they need minimal light so i dont use any lights in the tub. I just handle the snake in direct sunlight any chance i get. So i wouldnt worry too much about lighting, just heating is more important.
Thats my experience so i hope its right for you.
Cheers, Alan. |

Itz heated from above with an incandescent bulb. I had a branch running the full length of the enclosure under the light so he could get closer to bask. |

| | | | Hey man if u are after all those things i'll tell u what was recomended to me when i first set mine up. ok. well if u wish to observe him in nice light u can put in a fluro but thats optional. u'll probably need a 75 watt bulb in the top corner with a thermostat hooked up to it to keep the temperature contant. u will also b needing a thermometer that measures minimum and maximum temps. u'll have to wire the thermometer so it measures both areas of the enclosures temp. a humidity gage isn't necessary but some people prefer to have 1 as it can be harmful to our herps if the humidity is to high. if anyone wants to make a coment about my advice feel free to as this is only what was recomended to me. so far i have had no troubles. |

| | | oh and if u get the heating globe, makesure that u have it enclosed in say a wire cage that will fit aroud it or something, other wise ur snake will try and curl aroung the globe and then will get burt. not a good thought. |

I went to the local pet shop and got myself a thermometer, thermostat and a Rowco ceramic fitting and a 25W Sun Glo Daylight lamp as these were what they had in the petshop enclosures. They had their bulbs fixed to the ceiling and I figured if I do that then there would be no need for me to worry about enclosing the bulb as the snake won't be able to reach it till it has grown somewhat. I was wondering about the best location for the temperature probe, on the floor directly below the bulb seems the most logical spot to me, any suggestions ?

Also, the guy I'm purchasing my 4mth old Coastal Carpet from does not bother with heating at all so will this be a bit of a shock to the young bloke ? We are currently experiencing a bit of a cold snap up here in Brizzie with temps where I am getting down from 0 to -3 at the moment and I am wondering if the young fella should be gradually introduced to a heated enclosure.
cheers
