Herp show-again!!

Only a small thought.
We know there were HEAPS of people at the show who don't keep reptiles, but came along to have a sticky, which I think is GREAT!!!
But how hard would it be to have a 2 part, or 2 day show, one for all the keepers, and one for all the lookers!!!
Maybe they could then be organised very differently, with much less acess for the lookers.
Now I know it would be a bit of a nightmare, sorting out the 2, but maybe a special day for people who are members of a herp club, as I'm sure these people would not behave like some I saw on Sunday!!!
I would have worried a bit having an animal there, or is it only me???
What does everyone think??

Possibly a bit of a hassle...not sure though...

A big benefit would be that sellers wouldn't have to worry so much about young snakes being shaken/dropped etc...as they would only be on display for Herpers...

Another issue though might be that sellers of supplies might be more reluctant to go as they will not have the same concentration of potential buyers...also might be a big ask for the people organising it to cop two days straight of the hassles...

Yeah, I wasn't there but I'd imagine that on one hand it'd be a great idea for the safety of the animals, but on the other hand even though some people acted like [deleted], I'm sure there were plenty of people who changed their opinions of these "slimy animals" and hey - we need that!

Maybe there should be a clear set of rules about behaviour?? ... is there already?

Sorry, but i think there are alot of 'herpers' who belong to herp associations that are just as bad as the "newbies". Shaking containers and opening at free will etc. Even more so because they think they know what they're doing and are entitled to do so. Unfortunately i have met a few of these pple in this hobby. Plus it would probably stress the herps out alot more, u might need to supply heating over night rather than taking them home in the arvo and then bringing them back.

I didn't attend, but it sounds like there were alot of problems. If people were opening cages without permission, then why wasn't there locks on them in the first place? What else went wrong.. and right on the day?

I don't think that would work.

Firstly, the sellers of reptiles wouldn't come down on the Public day, because the public doon't have licenses and so there would be no sales. The people putting there animals on display for the show might only want to bother with it for one day - the animals would be more likely to be stressed, the effort of taking them home and then doing it all again the next day wouldn't be woth it. Very likely they would display on the Herper only day, as there would be less chance of little kids stressing the animals. So with no animals on show, and no reptiles for sale, all you have to entice the public is two or three petshops and some static displays.

It's a nice idea, just not practical.

I was there from 9am and stayed till atleast 3.30pm and there wasn't that much trouble! A couple of kids tried lifting lids on plastic tubs....it was controlled. Aside from the couple of little "brats" running around there was nothing else go wrong, to my knowledge. As far as the "brats" go, you will get them at any event.

Re: locks....The plastic tubs had tape placed over the lids to stop people lifting them. It is a bit hard to 'lock' a cheap plastic container.

Not really. Dramatisation of youthful enthusiasm aside I think, as always is the case, there were some that tried to stretch the envelope but all in all it was well controlled and quite safe and secure.

Yeah I would ......wait for it...... have to agree with you on this one Hix

I would not have my animals their for two days any way. (2 of my 3 animals hid for 80% of yesterday). I would no way in hell be leaving my animals over night, then the hiring of Security to watch the stock and Enclosures and other displays. Then the cost of the venue for 2 days instead just 1.

Perhaps we could look at the next one starting an hour earlier or the show starting an hour later. eg 0900 -1100 - Herp Club Members only
1100 - 1600 - General population

This then gives the interested people who want to buy herps or look more in depth and ask question etc a better opportunity to do it a little quieter environment.

That's my 2 cents worth anyway.

I'll see your 2 cents and up you another 2 cents. I agree with this split entry time. I feel it would be a good idea.

I didn't realise about using plastic tubs. Fair enough. You have to keep your eye on those bratty children! Starting earlier with herpers only sounds like a good idea, but how exactly do you separate herpers from the general public? Would they have to hold a licence or something? What about the genuinely interested who have not got a licence yet?

I certainly wouldn't say a lot of things went wrong...in fact the day ran fantastically....

There were a few kids running riot, but as stated, you get this everywhere...hell, I can't go shopping without wanting to slap a few children...

I think spacing the exhibits/sales area out a bit more (there was a fair bit of spare space) would solve many of the problems...

All up it was a great day and was organised VERY well, if only we had something like that more often...

If they were members of a Herp Club - licence or otherwise - they could be admitted

That idea certainly has merit, and I'll make sure the Show Committee is aware of it for next year.

This was the first show of it's size that MacHerps has attempted, so there were bound to be some teething problems. Next year should be better, especially if more commercial enterprises come on board.
