no they are not!!!

herpetology is a branch of zoology that specialises in reptiles and amphibians..... you need a bit of paper for that!

people that keep and breed reptiles are herpetoculturists.....

im doing animal studies at TAFE next year
followed by Captive Animals and so on
basicly leads up to an animal attendant at zoo's, wildlife parks and circuses haha
there was a reptile and amphibian husbandry short course a few weeks back that i missed out on due to my HSC but i'll be doing it next year.
And i heard something about a venemous snake handling course early next year so i'll be in on that one to.
at the end of my courses i can get into UNI and do zoology but not sure what i'll do yet

You don't always need a "piece of paper". There's quite a few "amatuer" herpetologists about. It's just they actually research, write up and publish their observations of wild and captive animals. It's not usually their day job though.

Steve Irwin didn't have the paper, anyone want to argue his title?
I think of a herpetologist as someone who has contributed to the available knowledge on "herps" by research, or observation regardless of a degree.
