I have a vague plan of going over to live in the UK again in a year or two, and since this time it could be for quite a while I"ve been wondering about the possibility of keeping some pythons over there - does anyone know or have any experience with doing this in the UK? I haven't started my research yet so no idea whether they even do it over there, but I"m very curious! If it's possible, what kind of snakes do they have? And what are the licencing requirements like? I can't recall ever hearing anything about it over there but I'm sure there must be something.. any info much appreciated |

Welcome to the site!
You can keep just about any reptile you can think of over there from what I've heard, I don't know about licences though sorry.
PM Moreliaman, he is over there and used to own a pet shop there, he will know if no-one tells you first.

I have kept in the UK at different times. The only thing you need a license for is venomous and crocs. Green Tree Pythons for $700 and everything we have here as well.
I have heard from a reliable source that the UK is crap though I worked there for about 6 years a little while ago and had a ball, great pubs, great people, great history. and places to visit. There is a huge number of reptile only shops and a very active reptile 'club' scene if that is what you are into.
Just do a Google search of UK reptile dealers.
Good luck with it.

I have spent pretty much all of my life in the UK except the last 3 and a half years here in Australia.
The Herp scene in the UK has changed a little over the last 5-6 years, The RSPCA has a hate of reptile keeping, and so do many of the active Animal Rights groups, who spend alot of time and money into trying to knock the hobby done. Almost all shows where animals could be bought were either cancelled or made just exhibit's, where as before you could pretty much buy anything from one of 10 or more shows per year.
The authorities were also going to change the DWAA (Dangerous wild animals act) licence to include large constrictors like Burmese, Retic's, Anaconda's and maybe even boa's, anything that got over 9-10 ft.
Not sure if this bill has gone through or not yet.
Apart from that, you can keep most species in the world, theres a huge selection being captive bred, but you still get your imports to.
Alot of people from the UK go over to Europe, to the big snake show's like Hamm(Germany ) and Utrecht(Holland), it's here where you can get your hands on some real bargains or rare stuff and come back to the UK with a export permit on the day if the species require it.
PM me and let me know where you will be going and I might be able to put you in contact with some people.
Lastly, why would you want to go to the UK?? Just kidding, you obviously have some work or something to go to, I just can't stand going back now I have lived in Australia!
Cheers Neil

Not sure if this bill has gone through or not yet. | I remember that, it was the RSPCA who recommended it. ...never got added, although they were talking about putting large constrictors onto a special separate licence...doubt it will ever happen though...but you never know !
Thankfully the RSPCA have pretty much backed off now, although they blow their trumpet every now & then because they have to be seen doing something !
The only thing you'll need to bring reptiles back from europe is a good sturdy poly box plus a reciept for everything living purchased (and if its needed CITES paperwork, the paperwork does allow it free travel anywhere within the EU, just dont tell the ferry company because they don't have a licence to transport livestock !!! If its DWA then thats a whole different ball game!!)
Also, considering the amout of people that keep reptiles in the UK, i would say its a tiny amount of people going to hamm
