I used plastic pot plant pots, I paper macheid(spelling) the outside to make shapes or rocks, then i painted the brown and then sealed the outside with bondcrete, it looks like a rock, and they can be any size ya want and its cheap. Also I added some old fish tank plants in the top for a more rainforesty look.

i use the rectangle planter boxes that you can buy from the junk shops, the often have a base that can be used as a lid. All i do is solder an entry hole and away ya go, make for easy cleaning too.

I usually just hide in my room, but as snake hides I have bought smaller hides for some and cut enterance holes out of pots for others.

i buy those plastic rocks like he ones from universal habitats, they are just plastic with hollowed out insides and i cut a hole in the side so the snake can get in them. looks very natural that way

I dont know why people bother with plastic...it doesnt take heat & keep reptile cool & they cant rub against it to help with slothing/shedding.........
I go to my local dirt supplier...garden supplier..............i get sand that is sand pitsafe that they supply schools with & they also sell wood for burning...you get great pieces for a fraction of the cost.........
wouldnt cost me more than $30 a year & i go every 3 mnths to get new sand & wood for all the tanks i do.
They even keep hollow logs & ones that look like caves for me...every now & then i bring in a reptile to show them who its for..........they say that the amount i get would blow away in a day!
Cheaper than fake stuff, better for reptiles & better for the hip pocket!

The ones that you can buy from reptile shops - are they okay? I'm not particularly creative or handy, so I'd rather just buy a couple!

Though I do like the idea of paper mache! Do you use non-toxic paint??

Get off-cuts from a board supplier. I got about 200 pieces of form-ply 450x225mm and knocked together a few hides out of that. Only cost was the nails!

for smaller pythons I like these professionally made hides (below) or plastic pot plant saucers with side entrance hole cut in.

or for bigger pythons I use upside down tubs

We just use these. I think I can remember getting them from the Reject Shop for a $1 or 2. Our MD's love them. Also use the boxes from Dry Cat Tucker.

This might be a silly question, but please keep in mind that I've had mostly just mammals and birds as pets before...

When a snake is in its hide, can you get it out? Or is it (like mammals) their 'safe place' and you shouldn't disturb them in there?

Tanks!

whether or not you can get it out of it's hide probably depends on the individual snake, I have adults who don't seem to mind but hatchies and juv's probably get a bit more defensive.

for my hides I use exo terra ones, and frozen dinner bowls which I cover in the substrate (aspen shavings) so it blends in with the rest of the tank theme or cardboard boxes covered with pebbles for same purpose.

I use the good old terracotta pot. The kids were excited the other day when I came inside with a frisbee ...I think they thought I was going to head off to a park with them Little did they know it was the perfect size to fill up with some Spagnum moss and place under the pot my slough-ready darwin was curled up under (geez I'm cruel hehehe...I mean...Muhahahahahahahaha )
