hooks

Ok I'm nmot sure wher this should go, so i'm gonna put it in chit chat.
How big do snake hooks have to be?
because I was thinking of making a couple.
would a hook about 2cm wide and high with a bit of wire about 4cm high on the other side be big enoug for a juvinile-yearling snake?
if not how big do they have to be?
If so, I was thinking of putting a clay handle around the last cm of wire so that the handle goes to about 5cm longer, and what would I have to do to stop the wire coming out from the wire?
Or would it be a better idea to just encase the hole hook in clay so the end doesn't damage the snake?
And is clay bad for snakes?
Also(last question I promise) how long away from the part that comes back up again should the handle go?

cheers,
Will

I think your best bet is just to buy one buddy. You would have to bend the wire a few times to stop the clay hande from slipping off the wire. You would need reasonably thick wire and also i would file the tip tp round it off so as not to damage the snake. The handle length depends on snake size and how aggresive it is. If its aggresive or a ven you would have a longer handle to keep it from strike range, if its calm or small a shorter handle.

Hey Will, I think the hook needs to be wider/bigger, You want the snake to freely slide over it then you lift it up. You dont want to grab the snake with the actual hook bit. If u made the letter c with your index finger and your thumb i would guess this would be suitable for most snakes. I think that wire is too thin and may damage ,cut snake. Find a local plumber and ask him to bend u up a peice of copper or aluminium gas pipe at say 1/4 or 3/8 of a inch (common sizes) make the length about30 to 50 cm depending on cage depth, then make a small wood handle by getting your Parents to drill a hole in it the same dimensions as the pipe and glue it, Voila expert snake hook,

Metal isn't porus (sp?) so no. Hence the reason you weld to merge metal not glue. If you bend the metal in a zig zag and put the clay around it it wont slip out anyway. Personally I would just buy one and also unless you have a kiln or know how to work with clay properly clay tends to become brittle and crumble.

just buy one or get someone who can weld to help you. get a golf club stick and some thick rounded off metal into a hook shape etc but IMO just buy one...
PVA glue????????? are you serious.. that wont last very long if you did use it..

many different variables involved as to what kind of hook, length of handle, type of snake, length weight of snake ETC..

Unfortunately to bend a golf club ( an older one as new ones are carbon fibre shafts) you will need to heat it up to anneal it (to soften the metal for bending). This will probably see you making freinds once again with you local Plumber with an Oxy/acet torch. Will ,Dont Do this by Yourself ,extremely BURNIES... Ouch... Maybe just buy one they're pretty cheap.

Just out of curiosity, why do you need a snake hook? As far as I was aware you didn't have a snake...
