ether,
Confidence is the key, open the viv, go in and pick up the snake without hesitation.
And yes, when they are out you will find they will bite less.
Better to get a bite or two now from a hatchling , than later from an adult!(I presume yours is a hatchling?)
One more thing, if your snake should bite, try not to flinch back and fling the snake, just take it, mutter a few words and continue handling, works for me! LOL!

Good luck with it.

Neil

Ether, if you are worried getting your snake out, you can get a retractable little snake-hook, they are btw. $10 and $20.
At least until you get a bit more confident, but in any case, they come in handy occasionally, especially after feeding. If you would feed out of enclosure, when you put snakie back, they are usually still in feeding mode and strike at anything. Just distract her with the hook near the head and pick her up by hand.
Also it won’t hurt too much getting bitten by a hatchie, just let her do it and when you realise it doesn’t hurt, you wont worry too much any more.
What ever you do, don’t pull away, you could pull some of her little teeth out and that could get infected then.

Good advice. I also hold my babies by the head for a minute or so every time I get them out to handle them so that when they are big it won't be a fight. My 5 foot Diamond Dice doesn't even struggle anymore, after 3 years of doing it he knows I am not out to hurt him. Yes after feeding can be a little tricky my childrens bit me the other day after she ate 3 rat fuzzies and she hasn't ever bitten me in 2 years before that.Good luck and enjoy!!

Damned good advice that Adam! I had never thought about head holding as hatchies onwards!! If they are used to it happening regularly then it has to be easier to do it when it is necessary. I will start doing that with all new arrivals from now on, thanks mate
Talking of new arrivals, I have two bubble blowing little heads poking out of their eggs at the moment so beter go check on them as it's been at least ten minutes Oh Got, I am a bad daddy

I thought holding them by the head all the time would stress them right out??

Ether, I approach my hatchlings with my palm splayed out facing them. This usually deters them from biting as they have nothing to grab on to. As one hand is splayed in front of the snake, grab it with your other hand. This distracts them most of the time

YES it will, when you go to try and pick it up slighly touch it with something else, (like the retractable hook) or just a stick, when the snake relizes that its you and not food slowly slided you two hands under the belly and slowly lift the snake out of the cage (dont grab from above) grabing the snake by the head and grabbing from above will stresses out the snake and feel threatened this may cause it to bite. Another good point have a particular day/s that you will feed your snake, but dont try and pick it up that day as it may think your feeding. So try handling everyday with the ecception of that feeing day also leave the snake a couple of days to digest its food before handling aswell, the're a bit like dogs and will react to your feelings so show now fear...you will be fine and so will your snake. [/b]happy hanbling

So now Snakes know what day they are fed???
That'll do me.

Take the calender out of it's enclosure, that way it won't know what day it is and you can pick it up any day.
