I picked up an old record cabinet today and I'm in the process of turning it into an enclosure for the Bredli im going to get soon. I'm not going to put it in there straight away, but I want something for when its ready.
The attached image is the plan I have for it and before I start cutting into it I was wondering what people's thoughts were about it. What I'm mainly concerned with is where Ive placed the vents and its size. The diagram doesnt show but its dimensions are 75cm(W), 55cm(H), 40cm(D). Will this setup be ok and is it a big enough size?
Another thing is the Reptile light that I need. Do I need the specific reptile light or will the plant glo light I have already be enough?
Any help appreciated so long as its not relationship advice .
Cheers,

The size should be fine for the first couple of years but as it starts to put some size on it you will have to upgrade to an enclosure about twice the size . You dont need a uv spectrum light , just a heat source to get enclosure up to the rite temp (25watt party globe in blue or red would be perfect)

IMO I'd put the left vent "top vent" at ground level so the heat doesn't immediatly escape. And also put the thermostat at the cooler end of the cage, if its near the light it will go on and off all the time, and also it will turn off at a lower temp than if you have it at the other side.
PS: Only do this if your gf will let you  (I gave enough help to be able to crack a joke right?)

I'd just put the stat lower and swap the top and low vents over.

thanks for the feedback guys. I got a new scanner a few weeks ago and needed an excuse to try it out Down the track I hope to get a bigger enclosure but wanted something practical to get me understanding how the enclosure should work.
I had a feeling that it woud eventually get too small, but in having to get more than one enclosure I am able to do more IMO
Thanks for the help

I'm going to disagree with the advice given so far
I would keep your vent placement as is. I always have a smaller vent up high near the heat source and a larger vent down low at the cooler end. I find that the escaping warm air draws cooler fresh air in more efficiently, preventing stagnant air to build up. In cooler months the smaller vent can be partially closed to maintain temps.

Couple more questions while I'm building.
1) Can a plastic BS(bayonet type) light socket handle the heat from one of those black light/heat lamps or should I go a ceramic job? Reason I ask is that I'll be going for one of those black heat/light bulbs that wont mess too much with the day/night cycle though still gives heat. I'm also considering whether I'll need to go with an ES(Edison screw type) socket anyway if there arent any BS bulbs that can do that.
2) If I use estapol to seal the wood, will that be toxic to the snake?
Thanks muchly for the help

I may be wrong, but i think the light globe you are talking about only comes in 75w, which will probably be too hot. A standard bayonet type holder will be fine for 40-60w globes which is what you wil require for an enclosure that size. The blue 'party' type globes work fine. Just look for the ones that are completely blue; some are not and let alot of light out at the neck of the globe.
Estapol is safe once it has completely dried and the smell is gone.

I would say that you should definitely get a ceramic ES fitting. I just got an "Oz Black" heat emitter and even though the neck of the bulb is insulated you will still need a ceramic fitting. You will find that most Herp globes are ES. The other thing that you will need is cages over your lights to stop your snakes burning themselves on the bulbs.
As far as an estapol goes, as MrBredli said once the fumes have dissipated it would be fine. Just don't do what I did and use a resin, I've been waiting two weeks for the fumes to go and they are still there, I've been trying heaters, fans, bi-carb and anything I can think of without success to get rid of the fumes. My poor babies are in tubs in my room and it's killing me that they can't go in their enclosure.
Another thought that I have been told to use as a sealer is watered down Bond-Crete. It dries fast, no fumes and it's clear. Wish I would have done this myself.
Good luck with the enclosure.

MrBredli,
Is the blue party bulb ok for night-time use?
