I have had my probes sitting on top of the egg tubs (as opposed to inside them) for the entire incubation period, and have had no problems whatsoever. The first batch are due to hatch in around 2 weeks and I've got it sitting on approx. 30 degrees.

...are we referring to Thermostat or Thermometer probes? I have my THERMOMETER probes in with the eggs and THERMOSTAT just outside it - no problem with spikes at all this way...

I have both probes sitting on tob of the tubs. I just adjust the thermostat until the thermometer hits the temps I want (about 30 degrees).

Flamin heck, now it looks like I'm best to take the probe out of the tub.
Although, the example of opening the tub, having the heat come on, then closing the tub causing a problem isn't likely the way I've done it as I have put the thermostat probe in a tub with vermiculite WITHOUT eggs so the one controlling the heatsource will not be opened and closed - just used as a temp guide. Now, I would say when the other tubs are opened their temps will drop, but if the heat in the incubator stays correct, then surely when the lid is put on and the door closed, it will come back up.....
Oh, look, I think a huge number of people have just kept the probe in the incubator itself and not in the tubs with the eggs and have had plenty of perfectly successful clutches hatch, so I think I might just do it 'traditionally' so to speak and leave the probe dangling in the incubator set at 29.5 if I can (I think thats a safe temp so up or down a degree if its out wont hurt)

Lol
Seriously set it at 30.5 cause imo 29.5 is the lowest safe temp and up to 32.5 is the higher limit.

easy solution is have the probe temp running the heat of the incubator, then have a dual thermometre with the egg and then you can get an accurate reading from both and ajust as necessary. As waruikazi stated you have to provide fresh air every few days by opening the containers. Thats the way i run it and haven't had any probs.
everyone will run different idea's. I've seen them incubated and 100% hatch rate from a 6 pack esky at room temp in the NT. The egg are pretty hardy. The egg will let you know if your tecnique is right or not
Good luck........

I use a dual probe thermometer one in the box with the eggs one outside in the incubator,i use a no medium box for the eggs.I like to know whats going on in both worlds as the eggs will generate there own heat.
