i'm at my mums place in caboolture and just found a yellow-faced whipsnake but it doesnt have the yellow head, will get pics up when i get home, does anyone know what these are worth and if i need a specialist licence for them, i would really love to get one

Apparently they only eat lizards and I've never seen any for sale either.

I dont know what the licencing is like where you are.
But i know for sure that my licence doesnt cover me to collect snakes from the wild. Further more they would need a poisonous species licence.
Maybe that is just here, as i said i dont know your licence restrictions. you would really want to check that.

Whip Snakes are only mildly so therefor don't need a specialist license.
Just a Class 1 in NSW.
Hard to find in captivity extrememly quick and probably not a good first snake.

Must be our ACT license system. They pretty much wont allow anything other than pythons. Colubrids come under venomous species here. Then again, i wonder if the girl really knew what she was talking about.

Most of the colubrids and midly venomous snakes on class 1.

judging from your post hornet is sounds like you have caught and still have this snake.
Not sure if you know or not but it is illegal to catch, pick up etc native animals in qld.
I know of a few people over the years that have been fined just from having pics of them holding wild snakes in qld.
you should just let the poor thing go where you found it.

Indeed.......I read that as he saw the snake, took some pics, and quite liked the look of it so was wondering what icence he would need to keep one purchased from a breeder later on.

and yes i know its illegal but i see plent of people from qld with pics of wild caught snakes and lizards(there was one just recently from a girl in bris with a beardie) i think as long as you let them go there is no harm done

They are available in captivity, though not often. And it's necessary to have what used to be called a specialist license but is now just an add on to a recreational permit. You would need two licensed specialist or DMP holders to attest to the fact you have the relevant experience and ability (which you don't have) before you could get one. And as we've discussed in the past Hornet it is illegal to move, photograph and hold on to (for any purpose) wild caught snakes unless you hold a DMP. While it's rare for people to actually be fined or to have their licenses revoked for photographing wild herps it is in fact the applicable punishment for being caught doing so (regardless of how many people choose to do it). And both Kris and I have told you this before. On more than one occasion.

I used to love catching reptiles when i was a teenager, wouldn't trade those memories for anything. While my mates were out smoking dope and getting drunk i was out catching tree snakes and yellow faced whip snakes, if i was a teenager again i'd do it again, but i wouldn't talk about it on public forums because this is a different age we live in.
By the way i do not recommend anybody breaks the law, no way, that'd be illegal.
