Just got my Blond Spotted Python

Hey everyone,

I just got my blond spotted python home a little while ago, she is awesome and very placid (so far ).

She has eaten for me already so that is a relief but she doesn't seem to be able to settle? Are they very active snakes? She has water, good temp gradient (32-26c) and an excellent hide that is really dark but she just keeps wandering around her new home, maybe she is just checking out the place but she seems to be looking for a way out!

Could she be looking for more food? I only had 1 fuzzy mouse at my house and I gave it to her and I was told that this is what she has been on, just 1 fuzzy so she should be used to eating only this amount. Any ideas??

Cheers.

I think you'll need to tell us how big she is first. Or show us some pics.

thanks spotted, I think I will, everytime I stick my hand near her she stops to smell it first, like she is seeing if it is food.

hix, I haven't had a chance to get some pics of her yet but I will post some when I get them done. She was born early Nov 03 and she is about 50-60cms.

hey sw
my spotted was very active when i first got her, very inquisitive
.... and some times now she still is. i wouldn't say she's very active, but just very nosy.
i'd say she's not hungry, just checking stuff out...
but i'm definately no expert.

they are just the cutest snakes, and mine seems to be the one that makes people who are scared of snakes change their mind. she just goes to sleep in your hand. who could be scared of that?

I'd be trying two fuzzies each feed, at least.

Hi Sw

The first primary rule when purchasing any new snake is to let them settle into their new enclosures. That is leave them alone for the first week or so.

Naturally it will seem unsettled as it is not familar with its new surroundings. This takes a little time. Normally you would not even try to feed a hatchling for the first 1 to 2 weeks till they had settled in. In this case you purchased a well established snake that will now eat whenever offered, even if unsettled.

But believe me, 2 to 3 hours is NOT enough time for a snake to settle in. Just give it time and feed it again in a few more days.

bigguy, it will probably take me 10 years before I learn that rule, LOL. Nah, I know that and I fully respect your decades of experience, but I am just the type of person that cannot wait, I trusted that she would eat and she did which is a relief. I took her out to get some photos and when putting her back she decided to go into the hide and she will be left to settle in now. By the way, would a 7-8month old snake still be called a hatchling?? She is more close to being a yearling isn't she?? What are they called at this stage??

hix, I will definately be giving her 2 fuzzies per feed, it was just that I only had 1 fuzzy with me at the moment.

Cheers, I will post the pics later tonight once I download them off the camera.

SW,
It's not a matter of not being the type of person to leave your snake alone. If you don't want it stressed out, you should leave it alone. If you're happy knowing that it's stressing the snake, then you can handle it. Either way, I'm sure you will be happy with your snake - they are a beautiful python.

BTW, where in Newie do you get your rodents from?

Hey Simon, I am not the type of person to restrain myself even though I should, I don't want it stressed out, I am happy to leave it now, I just like to get that first feed over and done with as soon as possible. I absolutely love her, she is gorgeous and i'll tell you something else I will be saving up to go for a bhp as soon as I can, I had the pleasure of seeing one quickly today and they are 10 times more beautiful in the flesh than in photos. At least the one I saw today was.

I get my mice for free from one of my daughters friends mum, although she mentioned the other day that she was having trouble keeping up with the demand of my snakes (they eat alot :roll, now I have another one, I will probably be paying for them from now on.

Hey ricko. yeah i think that spottedpython says a lot of stuff that is a bit far from the truth. nothing she seems to say ever coensides with the other stuff she says. sometimes its "oh he hasn't eaten in 3 months", and then before u know it she is saying how good a feeder he is. i mean wft?
