Hi,
I have just bought 2 juvenile central beardies, they are currently in the same tank as they hatched from the same clutch and are used to living together. The tank is 5.5ftx1.5ftx2ft so they have lots of room.
But one of them is always hiding in his cave & the other is always sitting under the heat light in the open. It's almost like it is guarding the heat light and the other one is scared.
Any advice on this would be appreciated as they are my first beardies.
Sounds like normal behaviour. There will almost always be a more dominant individual in a group housed together. The behaviours that can be observed vary from arm waving to not allowing others near their spots to fighting. For my mind, you have a few options. A) Seperate them. B) Provide a second basking site if you enclosure is suitable for it. C) Leave them as is and observe their behaviour. As they settle they may learn to share the basking site. I would go for option A.
take the cave out.....but replace it with something it can climb on
but also hide behind allowing it to get U.V at the same time
the basking area...with communal habitats, you must make sure they have a large basking area
try to avoid the dominance issues!
DO NOT FEED LIVE IN THE HABITAT!.... unless its meal worms & greens....& rodent if they are big enough
to eat them

It's important to leave a hide in the enclosure, especially for new acquisitions. It's essential to reduce stress and provide a safe haven.
currently there are 2 hides in the enclosure. soon i will be putting in driftwood, plants and more decorative things for them.
i think i may have so separate them if this situation doesn't improve.
