| | | Keeping heat overnight for Beardies
Gday all,
Well i got bitten by the bug once again yesturday and got 2 bearded dragon hatchlings. I am curious if there is a way to keep warmth in over night without using a heat mat? they are in a fish tank of 24in long x 20in high and 13in wide. I have the lids of the tank and with the light the lids still sit snug on the tank. If i use a basking rock under the spot lamp all day will it hold enough heat to keep the tank warm over night? or is a heat mat at the same end as the spot lamp the only way to go. The lamp is on from aprox 7:30am to about 6pm, and if i do get one, the heatmat will be on in the spot lamps off time. My herp room (bedroom) never gets below aprox 16-18 degrees, maybe a bit higher.
Cheers, Alan.

Alan, a heatmat, even a small one is probly the way to. but consider that wild beardies simply use sunwarmed rocks overnight. Then again they are babies and if you can provide a heat mat its a good idea. Not sure how much heat a rock under the basking lamp will hold aftywer its turned off. might depend on if its natural rock or fake plastic/fibreglass etc etc.
keep in mind that heat will leach from a all glass tank pretty quick.

Alan,
If you do use a heat mat, run it 24 hours a day. If you only switch it on after the globe is off, it will take so long to warm up to a reasonable temperature it won't even be worth it.

You may be better off, especially if they're only little tackers, keeping them in one of them plastic critter cages with one end on a heat mat and no overhead heat for the time being and move them into the larger tank when they get to a proportionate size. Obviously they'll need some natural sunlight a couple of times a week.

Or you can get a red or blue light for your heat lamp and leave it on all night. Maybe just a smaller wattage depending on what size you aleady have in it.
I have 9 yellow beardies about 6 or so months old in a 4 x 1.5 x 1.5 foot tank with a 2 foot uv light. I run a 60 watt red globe 24hrs a day and a couple of rocks for basking under it and they love it. soons as the uv goes off they curl up and go to sleep.

Take all the above advise and use it well my friend. That is the way to go. However Simon I disagree with how long it takes the heat mat to warm up. Depends on how deep the substrate is and what type, we use white sand and a small heat mat, and it only takes 15 minutes before the sand i warm, it's just that a heat lamp and heat mat will make the area too hot for them IMO.
