is there any difference between the nite lights that are IR red and the purple ones? such as these? http://www.animalattraction.com.au/i...d=21&Itemid=40
also being so many wattages eg 40w, 75w, 100w etc...how do ya know what wattage light to buy? Thx in advance...

One is red one is purpleish
There is a price difference too. The IR is about $7.50 for a 75w, and the OZ purple large 75w is $11.95 and the oz purple small 75w is 7.95
There area ideas circulating that suggests there is no 'real' difference, and there are ideas that suggest that the purple ones simulate natural moon light better. THe wattage merely differs the output rate of each globe. A 100w globe will raise the temp of slower than a 160w globe, Thus your globe size has more to do with size of enclosure.
What size enclosure etc do you have?

oh ok...i just wondered bout the dif colour, but that clears it up..thx
my enclosure is 7ft long x 2.5ft wide x 3ft high...what size/wattage do ya recommend? I have a heat mat on the warm end and am thinkin of a nite globe (mainly to veiw at night) and a day uv for day use (not necessary i know) but it will give the best of all worlds or a ceramic heater for day...

I have never got any of those rip off brands before, just use standard bulbs without the fancy names. Just make sure they are completely coloured evenly and all the way to the base.
They are usually about 10-20% of the price and do exactly the same thing.

Well actually cris, they dont but thanks for the irrelevent input,
Seriously how can you compare a white light that produces certain wavelengths of the spectrum and then is filtered by whatever paint is on the outside, to a light that only emits in certain ends of the spectrum, UV just isnt anywhere in the spectrum.

ummm, im thinkin of using a thermostat...in my beardie cage i just use a thermometer to make sure temps are ok...The enclosure is in the lounge room so will more than likely be aircon most of the day...i think i will get a ther stat though
i i do us on it wont matter what wattage i use cos it turns off at the set temp correct?

If you use a incandecent bulb rather than a heat emitter, it is advised to use a dimming thermostat as this will prolong bulb life.
If you use a OZ black heat emitter, you can use a pulse thermostat no problems.

The thermostat Plus is $70. They are a pulsing thermostat, i have used one of those with a ceramic OZ Black 60W for about 3 years with no hassles, and no changes. I really do rate the heat emitters. They just last so long, really making the price worth it. 60w OZ BLack is $35

On the other enclosure i have been using a dimming thermostat, and i can see how they are worth it for incubators and incandecant bulbs. Practically though i find this works well on my set up

wats the principle on the pulse thermos? they obviously pulse the power supply to the light/heater etc...are they the same as reguler thermos in the fact that when the preset temp is reached the supply is cut off totally? then back on when the enclosure cools?

Thats correct, a pulse thermo will have power completely on until temp is reached, then once reached it turns off, a dimming thermo use a 'resistor' to turn the power down and up rather than on or off.
Thats why pulse thermos arent recommended for filament globes etc, turning them on and off all the time shortens the life.
