if you don't need it to produce heat, why have it in there?

I use ceramic heat elements that screw into an ES type Light Fitting for day and night heat

| Tony, might I suggest that if this globe is for night viewing that you just turn it on at the power point when you actually want to view inside the enclosure, instead of a timer, that way you don't upset the temp gradients too much. <IMO> :

i would imagine even a 40watt oz purple will have some affect on the temp gradient, what sort of heat source do you use in the enclosure?
light bulbs can be used on timers, but it will usually dramatically shorten their life span with the constant clicking on and off!

i disagree with the oz light affecting the temp gradient. the reason is if his existing heat source is on a thermostat as it should be, when the oz light turns on for the night and produces additional heat, the thermostat will turn the heat source on for short periods only and will be off for longer periods then normal. the only way that the oz light will affect the temp gradient is if it is in a small enclosure and the heat from it alone increase the ambiant temperature above that set on the thermostat. or if his oz light is at the opposite end of his enclosure to that of his heat souce it will effect the gradient but if positioned next to his heat source there will be no problem
