take the price you may get for something and minus food, heat, enclosure costs and your time (whatever price you may put on that) and what do you get?? surprisingly less than you may first think...

You need to have a good understanding of where the market is and where it is going, also some luck doesn't hurt, but in general, you can make some profit in breeding most herps, be it bearded dragons, geckoes or snakes....if you do it right.

I'm just trying to work out whether we can afford the expenses involved by covering our costs by selling the offspring!
Dodgie, next time you need to give away a few water pythons give me a call! My husband is hooked on them since he discovered them at the Castlehill Expo on the weekend!

And don't worry Pat, you will still be our preferred food supplier when we start our SnakeRanch-esque national herp empire!

That is the reason many dog and cat owners use to justify not having their animals desexed. Unfortunately it leads to a surplus of unwanted animals which are usually destroyed. There's lots of good reasons to breed reptiles but that's really not one of them. |

There's lots of good reasons to breed reptiles but that's really not one of them. | I think that's a pretty big call - I've explained the other reasons I'm interested in breeding and I've been a responsible pet owner for many years (we have a desexed dog atm). I am planning in advance to determine whether we can afford to breed animals, I will do my research and breed responsibly.
My husband and I have always tried to teach our daughter to respect all animals and to appreciate the natural cycle of life. We recycle, compost, have a worm farm and grow some of our own vegies, and she has been part of all these activities since she could walk. She understands the importance of caring for nature, and to extend this by showing her how fascinating reptiles are, she can only grow up to respect and care about the world around her. I'm not sure what can be more important than that!
