Making snake hooks

I've decided to give making my own snake hook a go. I've already made a couple of prototypes which have worked out to about 6 dollars a piece. Do many people make their own? I'm just waiting for the final piece of my snake hook to arrive from ebay then I'll post pics to see what you think. When I post pics, if anyone is interested, I'll tell them how they can make their own snake hook for around 5 dollars in a big city and 6 dollars in a rural town like Alice.

If anyone has home made snake hooks, I'd be interested in seeing pics.

Thanks...

I use to have one that i made, it was a piece of dowel with the metal bit of a coat hanger screwed into it, works well with the small snakes. It was only a temp one untill I got to a pet shop that actually had a proper hook.

Sorry no pics but

I just have part of a broom handle with a bent bit of coat hanger attached at the end.

I think that's a very common - and effective way - of making snake hooks. It's hard getting golf clubs here and welding experience is also necessary. Do you have any pics?

Gee I wish I could weld

ummm, i hate gaffs, but if i was to make one it would have to be blunt and covered in a soft foam of some sort. with foam up the shaft.

what size elapids is it for?

I use them to take my pythons out of their enclosures. I'm too much of a scaredy cat to own elapids How do you take your elapids out of their enclosures? Surely you don't just put your hand in and pick them up

Why's that?

You don't need to weld, use an epoxy glue to fix the metal rod into the shaft of the golf club.
I also made some up out of fencing wire and dowel for the little snakes.

But you can't rough them up with a hook, you slide it under them and lift them up.
How do you handle elapids?

Do you put your hands straight into their enclosures and pick them up. I'm sure you'd end up in hospital numerous times if you were to try that. Surely you must lift them out initially with a hook of some description...

I'll second that.... Ryan (eladidare) once removed a brown snake from my yard, very professionally i might add, without hooks or any kind of utensil, except a bag..... Made it look like it was nothing to worry about.... just tailed it and put it into the bag...

Bill.

with regards to cage hooks, i dont use one but i have a flat piece of perspex that ive had for years... i can lift part of the tail up so i can get a hold on it. a cage hook is a very good tool to have if used correctly... and im sure you know how to use a hook magpie.

im very very careful with how i do it... im not just a freehandling yahoo i promise.
