I don't doubt his abilities. I've been keeping snakes for longer than I can remember - a lot longer than Ryan has been alive and I've only been bitten a couple of times (excluding hatchlings). Fair enough, both times were due to complacency but they still were bites. I have been struck at hundreds of times over the years, mostly when I first remove a snake from its enclosure. It might be because of my age and slowing reflexes, but there are a couple of my snakes that I always will move with my hook before I put my hand in. I think I'm still fast enough to avoid most bites but I've only got pythons and if one of those tags me, I just grab a camera and take a pic. If I had elapids, it would be a different story.
This is only my opinion and because I don't keep vens, this opinion is not based on experience or knowledge. Ryan has far more experience than me when it comes to vens
Ryan, do you ever use anything to assist in handling/catching vens?

yeah mate, i do own a hook which i take on every call out, i also have my pressure bandage in my pocket.
a hoop bag is a necessity and i wouldnt leave home without it.
if a snake is in a hard to reach spot.. eg in the new release stand at video ezy, then i would definately use the hook to retrieve the snake... yes its happened...lol
i grew up around cane fields and steve irwin doco's, that might be why i am like i am...
i do however promote the use of hooks if they are used properly and have protective padding around hook and shaft so no snake will cause itself any damage.
but just like everyone else, i am against tongs, they are snake killers... thats why theyre illegal in some states...

Ryan,
That's very good advice about the proctective padding. Now I'm going to have to modify my design slightly I'm surprised commercially sold hooks don't offer padding as standard equipment.
Thanks for the info..

I used an old golf club handle with a bit of stainless rod I had lying around welded to it. There's no padding on it but this doesn't seem to stress the snakes out or agitate them. All edges and welds are buffed smooth so there's no sharp edges. This one seems better than any of the commercial ones I've tried.
This is the only pic I had handy...

What we use is golf clubs, get a hack saw and cut the club off.
Get a paint roller and break the handle off and the roller so you have a hook!
Slide the "handle piece" of the roller into the hole where the club was,
and get concrete putty from a Hardware shop and mould it together.
It works a treat, its so strong ( if done correctly) we lift old car bonnets with it.
Hope it helps.

For a simple cheap hook just for adjusting position of cranky jungles whilst cleaning I use paint roller handle. You can get a 2 ft handle for the little 10 cm foam rollers that works just perfectly.

My snake hooks that i have made in the past are from golf sticks, i went to where they manufacture them and just got the rods which were about $10 then i got some stainless 10mm rod and bent it to shape ,threading the stainless rod then screw into golf stick, i even got them to put the grips on, over all cost was about $20 per rod and 100% . Out of using the same golf sticks that i purchased i made some pinning tools to pin elapids as a different method of capture with out hurting the snake, using U shape rubber coated hooks and then a soft rubber tube fixed to the rubber hook, Its great as it flexes with the snakes movment and dosent crush or do any damage and is 100% effective. over all cost $15 .
cheer steve

Golf clubs have the best hand grips and the newer types are fiberglass or l even scored a carbon fiber one . Also love the $2 shop extended tongs , NOT FOR SNAKES , but have you ever had to pick something out of a cage . Like a rat you accidently dropped in a bad spot in with a big python with strong feeding response .

A mate of mine has a Red Bellied Black he just picks up by hand straight from the enclosure just grabs it mid body like it was a python.
I am half expecting him to get tagged one day but I guess it just goes down to how well you know your snake.
He has a Death Adder on the other hand that he puts in a holding container before he pulls it out of the enclosure.
So really its just how well you know your snakes temprement

Hey there, i'm fairly new to keeping pythons but I made a snake hook out of a coat hanger. It was a metal one - just straightened it. Then at one end, bent it into a hook and put a small rubber cap on it (was quite sharp, didn't want to be poking my babies). On the hand end, folded it a few times to make it thicker (yes it took a while, the smaller it gets the harder it is to bend), and then put a cricket bat grip on it Works like a charm... cost me.... nothing
